Thanks to the interwebs, I now know that I live in DYNAMICREGION. How cool is that?

One of the ad-customization services misidentifies my work location as a small town 15-20 miles outside the city. Every time an ad tells me about a "Coopersville mom" who lost 20 lbs with this "one weird trick", or how "Coopersville drivers" without a DUI save money on their car insurance, I just chuckle about the silly things that people out in Coopersville apparently do.

I work here in st. Louis, but our company's point-of-Internet-presence / WAN gateway is in El Segundo, CA, according to the One Weird Trick ads we see.

I'm not going to lie to you. When I realized I could save that much money in DYNAMICREGION, I jumped up and did a little dance.

I for one am heartily sick of the "One weird trick" and "The shocking secret" ads.

Does anyone even respond to those things?

My proxy at work tells the world that I work in France. Go figure.

Where do I look to determine this?

This site will report to you most of the information that web sites can determine about you just by accessing them, including what it believes to be your location.

I can tell because when I try to go to www.yahoo.com it's all in French (France French, not Canadian French).

Cool, it says I am from North Texas, only about 500 miles or more off.

Basically it is doing a generic lookup of the last public IP address it can trace you to. The IP address that has been assigned to you is probably registered to an isp that has its main offices in North Texas.

Thanks! :)

It is off only by 10 miles or so in my case.

It nailed me, showed the intersection where my house is. Creepy.
