Improvised Foot Peg

Post by TomCat »

I prefer to ride the scoot with my feet angled back, for two reasons:
1) It hurts like hell to lift my right leg forward (recent hip surgery)
2) For me, it just feels right & I have much better balance/control with both feet on the rear part of the bike.
For the right foot, I just rest it on the muffler cover.
For the left foot, I've been resting it on the spot where the kick-start & center-stand come together (small area).
Well, it turns out that a 3/4" deep socket fits snuggly over the ribbed/rubber cap on the kick start, making it a perfect foot peg. I test fitted it & then used a little super glue for the final install.
In normal riding there is not enough pressure on the kick-start/center-stand together to cause them to drop, but just to be extra cautious I'm using bungee cord for now until I can figure something else out.

It actually looks better in person than in the pics, if that matters.
We ride scooters, what do we care what others think anyway?

What happens when you go left tho?

There is a reason the kicker folds, You don't want to catch it while going around a corner.

Nice :) I know on my 50 just barely touching the kick while running makes a grinding sound I wish I never heard nor ever wish to hear again.

I think the main reason it folds is to get it out of the way for putting down the center stand. I know some people take corners pretty hard, but it's not like you have to lean that far.

My main concern would be putting too much downward pressure on it, and accidentally engaging the gears for the kickstarter while riding.

Update:
After taking a spin, the socket is a bit slippery for your foot to get a grip.
Thus this (which I had laying around in the garage):

Much better now!
With bungee:

Without bungee:

It still folds :)

Bungee for now (it's really tight). Better solution (?) later.
Speedy recovery!
Thank you!

Yeah, be very careful with that bungee. You wouldn't want it unclipping while riding. I once had a bungee come undone from my milkcrate after a bump and a kindly pick-up driver alerted me to it hanging off the back, dragging next to the wheel. Now I'm super-cautious or use RokStraps. You'll also want to be careful with your boot on the exhaust cover. Wouldn't want to get a melt going.

I just put my feet on the passenger pegs. Is that too uncomfortable for you? My mom is going through the healing hip thing...speedy recovery!

Please be careful. In addition to the caution voiced by others, regarding engaging the gears, or leaning too far one way or the other and dragging your feet, if you need to do an emergency stop you have no feet to brace in front of you on the floor board. I've noticed on my Buddy's, that braking hard, if I do not share the pressure a bit more from my legs bracing, that I can feel the handlebars flex just the tiniest bit. Not sure if that would be the case with the scooter you have.

Not to mention in a hard brake, if for some reason you don't have both hands and arms pressing equally on both sides of the handlebars, with no feet pressing below, relieving pressure from the handlebars, you could go down hard very fast, with potentially disasterous results.
