Oklahoma scenic ride suggestions?
I have to be in McAlester, Ok on Sept 28 and Oct 1. Since it would make little sense for me to go home Friday evening only to turn around and come back Sunday I'm planning on taking my scoot. Then I'll spend Saturday and Sunday crusing around the area. I do want to get at least a few miles in Kansas to fill in the hole in my ride map. So I'm thinking of the 19 miles of Route 66 that is in Kansas to take care of that state.
I've thought about doing something like http://goo.gl/maps/WQqIe but I'm open to other suggestions from folks who know those areas better than I do. Especially since the Talimina Scenic Byway is not yet showing its fall colors.

Ha that sounds fun
I've been all through there and have family all over there. If you come as far north as Overland Park KS hit me up. If you go through Atoka OK on 69 say high to my brother ha ha. Get some Taco Mio in Atoka or hit the truck stop next to the Walmart and gas station for food. If you go through Krebs OK near McAlester hit up Iles Of Capri resturant it's the best Italian in OK. Also has a small market that sells great Italian food and fresh mozzarella cheese yum yum. Oh and have some Braum's for me. We don't have that or taco mio up here and I miss Braum's so much I could cry.

Just travelled through...
I just travelled route 66 from Ca to Rolla Mo. and my favorite stretch was from Edmond (Arcadia) OK to Baxter Springs KS.
Lotsa to see, and a very scooter-friendly piece of the Mother Road. The Scooter-friendliest portion IMO ( although we travelled by car as were tight on time to see my son graduate Military Police school at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.)
Watch out for Armadillos!
On this stretch you will encounter everything from Pops gas-station in Arcadia, to the Blue Whale in Catoosa. The Route 66 Museum in Galena KS is a worthwhile stop with a docent who will be more than grateful for a visitor!
There's also a great little motorcycle museum in Warwick OK, the big round barn also in Arcadia and lots more cool stuff with gorgeous scenery. Theres a great iPad/iPhone app avaialble with Route 66 info and landmarks to help ensure you maximize your time and see-recognize as much as possible.
If you find yourself in OKlahoma City....a stop at the Oklahoma City Memorial
will be a beautiful and sobering reminder of our mortality and the potential terrorism has to touch anyone and everyone these days.

I'll have to take note of the Iles of Capri resturant since I have to go to that area far more often than I'd like (problems with land we inherited outside of Eufaula). I was there twice in August and will be there again twice in September, sigh. Usually I take the car but this trip I'll take one of the scoots. Not the Buddy since it's nearly 500 miles just to get to Eufaula and I want something comfortable at 70mph for the ride up. I've eaten at the Braum's in Eufaula but we usually end up at the Boomarang for burgers. I've stopped several places along 69 between McAlester and the Texas border for food but don't remember seeing a truck stop in a Wally World parking lot, I'll have to look for it.NeoGenesisMax wrote:I've been all through there and have family all over there. I don't think we'll (one of the Kansas peeps from Modern Vespa is planning on joining me) get as far north as Overland, KS but if you'd like to revisit 66 in Kansas on your scoot we'd love to meet up with you. Latest ride draft is http://goo.gl/maps/ohkfZ so we'd be looking at late Sunday morning to pick up Route 66 in Kansas.
mattgordon. I'll probably leave Route 66 somewhere southwest of Claremore (family there) and not go all the way west to Edmonds at least on this trip but I'll keep that part in mind. Glad to hear its scoot friendly. Did you ride the "sidewalk" road portion?

I haven't been to McAlester in a few years, but I have a lot of family history there. Isle of Capri is good, but I'd recommend giving Pete's a try, too. Their lamb fries are delicious, and their Choc Beer is pretty good, in my opinion. If you're not feeling like Italian, Ball's BBQ in McAlester is good, too.cdwise wrote:I'll have to take note of the Iles of Capri resturant since I have to go to that area far more often than I'd like (problems with land we inherited outside of Eufaula). My wife and I will be staying in Davis, OK for a weekend in a cabin near Turner Falls. I was thinking bout trailering the Stella with us so we can check out the hills and back roads around the area. Anyone have suggestions for routes around the Arbuckle Mt, to Davis to Sulpher areas.
Thanks

You might check http://www.sundaymorningrides.com/road/states/OK.shtml and see what it recommends in the part of the state you'll be in.SockyTX wrote:My wife and I will be staying in Davis, OK for a weekend in a cabin near Turner Falls. Can't really help you there; I've been to Eufaula maybe twice in my life. The only things I remember are the lake and the Fountainhead resort.cdwise wrote:Good suggestions for McAlester food, any for Eufaula where I usually spend my time while in Oklahoma.

Been awhile since you've been there then. I hadn't seen anything called the Fountainhead resort in the 2 years I've been going up to that area frequently so I googled it. Looks like the park changed its name in 2002 to Lake Eufaula State Park and the Fountainhead Resort was sold to the Creek tribe at sherriff's auction in 2005 and is apparently scheduled to become a casino when all the paperwork is done transferring the land into the Indian Land Trust. The lake is something though.hackett wrote:Can't really help you there; I've been to Eufaula maybe twice in my life. I found out a couple hours ago that the reason for my trip to Oklahoma is being rescheduled which is extremely fustration. The only good part about it that a) there's a 40% chance of rain when I was supposed to go, and b) it will be at least 2 weeks before the new date so there will be a better chance of fall color on the Talimina when I do go.
I've made notes of the suggested dining places and roads for whenever I do get up there on the scoot.
