More help needed re: stolen scooters in Boston

Post by MollyMads »

Hi Everyone,

As some of you might remember, my boyfriend and I had both of our scooters stolen in Brighton last July. I just received a call from the District Attorneys' office that the guy caught riding my scooter was arrested and convicted. I was also told that this Wednesday he is having a restitution hearing, which is where I need your help. I didn't have insurance and haven't had the spare cash to fix the scooter (the ignition was ripped out, mirrors were removed and the seat lock was busted) so it's been sitting in my basement...

The DA's office is asking for documentation regarding the cost of the damages TODAY and of course the scooter shop is closed until Wednesday...

I know it's a stretch, and I know it's impossible for anyone to come up with an estimate without looking at it, but can anyone help me come up with documentation on parts needed to fix the ignition, wiring harness and seat lock? I have documentation for the towing and mirror replacements, but I (for obvious reasons) haven't been able to find pricing for a new ignition assembly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might be able to approximate costs from this site:

As for the labor, do you recall your shop's labor rate? Mine charges $75/hr, but that's for Tucson, AZ. Your shop rate may be higher ($85-90/hr). I'd guess I shop might bill 2-4 hours for the repair; skinning the bike to repair the ignition and the rear lock is the most time consuming part, I'd think.

Mind you, this is all speculation. I haven't had to do that sort of work on a Buddy before. Good luck!

EDIT: The ignition assemble looks to cost $84.50 at this time. I found in under wiring harness in the Buddy 125 section. Don't forget shipping and expect some dealer mark-up for parts.
At what point does a hobby become an addiction? I'm uncertain, but after the twelfth scooter, it sorta feels like the latter...

Seriously...I've lost count...

Seven mopeds ...that's still manageable...

Try calling Scooterworks for a quote, too. They'll know what you need if you describe it to them.

I am stunned that the GA 1) is prosecuting, and 2) followed up with you. Absolutely stunned. I got nowhere with the cops to try to find my bike, and I've been all over the city, over and over. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the help - Mark at Scooterworks was able to set me up with a quote for parts over the phone.

I'm pretty sure that the only reason the scooter was even recovered and charges were brought against the guy is because the officer we first reported the theft to convinced the detectives to take it as a motor vehicle theft, rather than a regular larceny. The detectives were awesome and super responsive, so I got lucky in that regard. Siobhan, fingers still crossed your bike shows back up unharmed. az_slynch, thanks for the link - I'm sure that will come in handy at some point!

This was guy's SECOND scooter theft conviction...I hope there's a special place in scooter hell for repeat offenders.
