Normal Buddy (50cc) acceleration?

Post by UWHusky »

I just purchased a used Buddy (50cc), and have a question about general Buddy behavior.

The scooter idles fine and seems to run generally fine. However, is it normal for it to vibrate and be louder more in mid speeds? There seems to be a speed range (15-20 mph) where it seems to be louder, and quite frankly, less "happy" sounding. However, once it accelerates to about 20 mph, it seems to quiet down (or it gets into a rhythm, if you will).

It doesn't seem to be a load issue, because it sounds less happy even going downhill within that range. Again, if I give her more throttle, it snaps out of it once I am at a higher speed.

This may be normal Buddy behavior--I just don't know what I don't know.

I've noticed that mine gets a bit noisier as I'm accelerating, but loses that "edge" as I reach cruising speed, though I've always attributed that to just the extra work of ... accelerating.

I've experienced something similar with my past and current Buddy 50. It vibrates a lot around 15-20 mph. Perhaps it's from worn weights? Or maybe the combination of the roller weights, variator, engine vibration, etc... has some resonance around that speed.

This sounds inline with my experience.

I agree with TVB, kungfooren and rentonhighlander. What you described sounds typical of my experience with our Buddy 50.

Alright--good to know that it's nothing to worry about. Thanks!

Let that Buddy 50 flap it's wings. Louder the better.

Yes, that's the first time I have ever been identified. I grew up in Briarwood South and have lived in Spokane the last 6 years. I'm quite familiar with newport and have played basketball against *Mark Pope and worked at the mcdonalds down the road in factoria(*newport high alum and former nba player).
