I got a Buddy 125.......

How do you all know when to change your rear brake linings.
It is not like you can visually see them unless you take things apart.

Not 100% sure on the Buddy, but on the Honda scooters with drum brakes, there was an indexing tab on the rear brake cam, between the operating arm and the brake plate. It was visible from the outside. The trick was to check the tab while someone squeezed the brake. If the tab pointed to a mark on the brake plate, the shoes were worn to minimums and were to be replaced.

The Buddy Owner's Manual for a Buddy 50 makes mention of such a system on page 35 (page 22 of the PDF). Maybe it applues to the bigger Buddies?

I haven't changed the rear brake but I just replaced by back tire and doing so required removal of the exhaust. Popping the tire off exposes the brake mechanism though so at least it's not too hard to get to.

And the rear brake linings will last a lot longer than the rear tire .

I got the service manual from the link that I've included below. Page 30 talks about "Rear Brake Adjustment". One of the comments is, "Note: When the arrow of rear brake indicator align with the arrow of left crankcase, change the brake lining." I see an arrow on the rear brake arm, and an arrow on the rear brake hub. I think those are the two arrows that they are talking about aligning. When the two arrows align, then it's time to change the linings.

Does anyone else read this differently, or have difference experience? Thanks.

I looked at my Buddy 125 and noticed the 2 arrows you are talking about.
According to the alignment criteria, I still have 2/3 of my brake lining left.
So thanks for educating us how to determine if we need to replace our rear drum break linings......without have to take off the wheel drum.

I got a scouring sound from spinning my rear wheel by hand. It sounds like opening and closing a bedroom dresser door.

It could be that the brake linings have not retracted back enough from contacting the drum.

Or worse yet, the wheel bearings are bad. Would that make a scouring sound?
