Modern Buddy

I have a Buddy 125 that I bought used about a year and a half ago with 5000 miles on it. It has treated me great since then mostly taking it on short commutes to work. The dealer didn't give me too much info on when I should bring it in for service such as oil change or tune up, but did say that it was given its 5000 mile service when it was brought into them. Like I say, no issues other than a little squeak in the rear brake.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Owners manual can be found here. Follow the service interval suggested, and you should be fine.

Did you buy it from a Genuine dealer?

There is a table of recommended maintenance in the Buddy Owners Manual. The Owners Manual recommends an oil change every 1000 miles. In my opinion, oil should be changed at least once a year regardless of mileage. If you are exceeding 1000 miles per year, I can't help but think that the 1000 mile intervals are quite frequent, especially if you are using synthetic oil (can't hurt, of course )

I put 800 miles on my Buddy in the first month, and service with oil change cost me $150. I can't imagine doing that about every 6 weeks!

The first service does include more than an oil change, of course. My dealer charges $40 for just an oil change. Still, oil changes are easy enough that most of us do those ourselves. Talking about scooters that put on a fair amount of miles each year, I think it is also common to change the filter at ever second oil change rather than every time. Makes the other changes quite simple that way.

That makes me feel so much better! I'm a broke nursing student trying to save money on gas, and was so afraid $150 every 6 weeks would just cancel out everything I'm saving!

I'm pretty mechanically retarded, but how do you do an oil change on a buddy? I'd like to learn how to do some things myself.

Nice that the 5K service was done. If you are smart enough to be a nursing student then you are WAY smart enough to learn to change your oil!

a) You're going to have to deal with fluids far more unpleasant than used motor oil as a nurse.

b) The attention to detail doing an oil change is less than you'll need when administering an injection.

c) You can do the oil change when you're in the mood, as opposed to in the middle of the night, on Christmas day, etc.

d) Scooters (typically) don't move while you're trying to change the oil.

e) The motor on a scooter is far less complicated than the human body.

f) Nurses often are called to do a lot more than most people realize (or give them credit for). Might as well add scooter maintenance to the list.
