Modern Buddy

Good morning! I've been having a wee problem with my scoot off and on, and today it really got my goat, so I thought I'd see if anyone else was experiencing this. I ride a 2007 Buddy 50.

I'll get my scoot out and ready to go, get all geared up, and put her on the center stand. Start her up, she goes right away and then idles very high for probably 30 seconds while I put on my helmet and gloves. Then the idle drops way down to a putter.

At this point, on a good day, I can hop on and go. She might die while I'm waiting at an intersection (always fun) but I can get her going again via start-button. I usually try and keep a little gas going so she doesn't idle so low; usually this works. After I've ridden to work in the morning, it's not a problem coming home.

On a BAD day, she simply refuses, and dies after the first high idle. I try starting again, which happens one of two ways - she starts, idles for maybe a second, then dies again; or, she doesn't start at all, and instead does that little 'Brrrring!' catch. I can kickstart her into the start, idle, die pattern, but the end result is the same -- strip off my gear, put her back away, and sadly drive my Subaru to work (usually late).

My dad already adjusted my idle up, and it's not done anything besides increase the intensity of the first high idle. Any ideas?

I'd check the all the connections between the carburetor and engine block, any small amount of air getting in where it shouldn't would cause very similar symptoms. Make sure no hoses are cracked or disconnected, and all clamp connections are snug and fitted together properly.

Im having the same exact problem. Did you ever get it fixed? If so what was the problem?

I'm not versed on the 2T's but maybe increase the idle speed and run some Seafoam through the system?

Idle speed is too low.. could be just normal. things vibrate loose. 1/4 of a turn on a screw driver should fix it

Sometimes this happens to me if the weather changes...like, it gets cool suddenly. I just rev the engine a few times and then open the throttle a little when I'm stopped. Usually, the problem goes away within a few minutes.

Pull your sparkplug and examine how it looks?
Wet black? Then you are getting plenty of fuel to it, but not enough spark to burn it all. Problem could be your: plug, ignition wire, coil, cdi, stator.

I have been working my way steadily up this food chain for the last few months, one part at a time. New stator is next for me.

There is a little plastic screw on the left side near the air box. Turn it up a scoach and see how it does? Otherwise sounds like your carb needs adjusted.

I had the same issue on my original Buddy 50. Worse in cooler weather. The dealer said it was because the auto choke was turning off too early. He removed the plastic cover on the auto choke, located on the top of the carb. Never had the issue after that. It's worth a try. The cover can be replaced of it doesn't work.
