The Dawn Patrol
I like to get up Early on a Sunday, tho any day will do, get up and on the scoot before Sun Rise and unwind a bit, the ride to an edge of the city or across it ahead of traffic, eventually peeling off a layer or two, untill after a few dozen miles I retire to coffee a few calories and a paper. Sound familiar? R

I don't do this very often. In fact, the only time I can recall doing it was at the end of my first big road trip, when the S.S. Badger dropped me off in Ludington MI at 5:30am, after just a few hours of sleep. With about five hours to go to reach home, I rode through dark and foggy farmlands toward home, as the world came slowly to life around me.
(If all goes as planned, I'll be repeating that ride in about 12 days.)

There has been a lot of construction near me as the redesign of the DFW Connector is being finished. I usually rise quite early on Sundays and like to scoot all the new highway bridges as they near completion. Without a soul on the road, I own those bridges... Just me and Stella.

I'm another Sunday early riser. Mostly due to the Army waking me up at 4:30 am, but old habits are hard to break. Once I'm out and about its off to breakfast at my favorite diner, roads are clear as a bell, which makes it nice since I don't have to compete with anyone for road space.

Weekend mornings are tough for me: I have a longstanding tradition of breakfast with my youngest son on Saturday morning at the Waffle House, and on Sundays I'm a church musician, so riding's pretty much out.
Now if I could just convince The Mrs. to let me take the youngun to WH on the scoot.....

Yes, nothing like a Sunday morning ride. And nothing worse than sleeping in and shortening the amount time until the Sunday evening blues (as in "damn, work tomorrow") start to set in. I get those really bad, especially as we head into late fall and the daylight hours get shorter and shorter. I'm happy to have a job, but wouldn't turn down a Powerball jackpot

I love a dawn ride. It's one of the few times in LA the streets are mostly empty. The cool air and the light are always appreciated. There have been a couple times when I've ridden through the mountains at dawn. Beautiful, if you don't mind being blinded as you come around every other corner.

I've been recently getting called out to work the media booth (visual screens) at our churches new satellite location, about 25 miles west. The check in time is nice and early for set up and practice, so it makes for a great reason to head west before all of the cagers wake up. The return trip could be a little hectic if I took the most direct way, so I take the longer round-about way home which is WOT on a fast highway almost the entire way.RoaringTodd wrote:I've found Sunday morning the best time to ride.... to church.
Either way, getting an early ride in lately beats the heat of the mid afternoon, that's what the pool is for!
