custom paint - design, not all over

Post by vijamendelson »

Hey!

I just brought home a red 2007 Buddy (named Lorelei). I need lots of practice driving, that's for sure! Especially those hard rights...

I searched the archives, but none of the topics dealing with paint really covered this, so I am starting a new one. I have a friend who I would like to paint a design on my Buddy (maybe 4-5 inches square). It would involve a few different colors, it's not an all-over job, so spray paint won't cut it. What's the best way to get his art on my Buddy so that it doesn't crack/flake off in a short time? What kind of paint have people used for detailing (stripes, etc.) that could be brushed on instead of sprayed on?

Thanks!
Vija

Hi Vija. Welcome!

I am not sure on the best type of paint, but I belive most of the stripe work you see in photos on ModernBuddy are actually automotive pinstriping stickers. I wish I could be of more help.

Some automotive touch-up paint might work out for ya...

Widely available at auto parts stores with nail-polish-like brushes.

You could spray clear coat over the whole panel afterwards if you wanted to make it stick around as long as possible. :D
Huh? What just happened?

It would depend on the complexity of the design, if the colors bleed into one another with fades, gradients, etc. If they're solid colors, you could spray it on (or use touch up paints) using stencils. If it's being designed on a computer, your friend could print color separations for each stencil.

If it's too complex for that, it may be easiest to have it printed as a clear vinyl decal, trimmed and applied that way. Most sign shops can do this.

But, as I said, a lot depends on the actual design and where it's being applied.

why not try the 'cling ons' that bone girl uses; then if you don't like it, easy off.

Most Kinko's and print shops will now print window clings—graphics on transparent vinyl that will "stick" to smooth surfaces but can be peeled off and reapplied.

What do you need to supply them with (Kinko's)?

The premade design or name in whatever lettering style you want?

Does it need to be on a specific paper?

Yes, you'll need to supply them with some kind of design, probably on disk. Should be 200dpi or higher resolution to look good. You may want to call first; I'm not sure they all print window clings but there are several in my area which do.

You can also scan original artwork, either on your own computer or at a work station at Kinkos.
