Scooter Fun to Risk Ratios!!

Post by sfchorus »

Hi all,

A friend of mine recently sent me this chart illustrating the "fun to risk ratios" of some of things people do (some are hobbies, some are ways of life, I think). I would put scootering right up there with rock climbing. Where would YOU put scootering on this chart?

I'd definitely put it farther to the right than rock climbing. Of course, the "fun" scale is going to be totally subjective.

It would be interesting to see actual data on accidents/injury etc - so as to have an objective measure of how dangerous one thing is relative to another.

Now that I think about it, I have to agree with you. In traditional rock climbing, you're really protecting yourself from your own lack of skill (and the occasional random act of nature like rock fall). In scootering, you have to protect yourself against everybody else's lack of driving skills...lol!

For some people the "risk" and "fun" of these activities are intertwined; BASE jumping would not be fun for them if it weren't inherently risky. And likewise, there are people for whom those two things pull in opposite directions; I would not find BASE jumping fun. So you can't really make an objective chart like this.

I put it right between, "I don't want my wife and family to know how risky this is" and "I don't want my friends to know either." :)

But, in reality, I think we're somewhere around mountain biking. I think.

The chart is kind of a fascinating idea.

There are people who are clearly adrenaline junkies and can't have fun without a sufficient amount of risk. To a large degree, I'd say most scooterists aren't in this camp. We would have chosen bigger/faster machines and more dangerous pursuits. The people who ride scooters in a very reckless way aren't adrenaline junkies as much as idiots. (Ha. Who knows? Maybe they're just adrenaline junkies on a smaller scale?)

I'm a speed junkie but have found that the bigger/faster the bike/scooter I'm on, the more cautiously and sensibly I ride it. Most of the time. Well, sometimes.

But what I really want to know is: Why is snow shoveling so risky?

Snow gets heavy. It's also slippery. But mostly heavy lifting. I've injured myself more from snow shoveling than from scooter riding.

It increases the chances of spilling your beer which, incidentally, becomes indistinguishable from dog piss once frozen. Subsequent attempts to differentiate between the two should also be included in the chart.

Risk is all subjective, and most of the time articles done to highlight risk in activities we as humans enjoy are written by people who don't partake in the activity and know nothing about it.

People insist that my lifespan will be shorter because I ride a bike. I personally feel it will be longer the more I ride. Others say the same thing about shooting sports, living in the inner city as opposed to the "safe" suburbs and eating undercooked bacon. They (the accountants, armchair OSHA experts and those afraid of life) insist I will live a longer and "more fulfilling" life by deleting these things...

... while they guzzle their Venti Starbucks and charge their electronic cigarettes while updating their instagram account from their iPad while driving.

You leave my bacon and my scooter out of judgment and I will leave you to your caffeine buzz and filter effects. We will both be happier
"Earth" without Art is just "Eh"...
