Buddy 125 Variator? Mallossi, Polini?

Post by kev187 »

Hello All, I do not post often here, as I do not own a Geuine at the moment. But I am a avid scooterist and own several bikes, and have extensive tuning experience.

We have a new member of our ride group and she is on a Buddy 125. She is looking to get some more power and some top end. Of course, I suggested Final Drive mods.

I have a big ruckus and small ruckus. I have had great experience with the Polini Variator on my small ruckus, it made night and day performance upgrade, especially with a Blue Contra Spring and dialed in sliders.

I see Polini has a full set for the Buddy 125 Available and it comes with a Contra Spring. Anyone have any other suggestions? Looking more for some top end performance. I already know a contra spring helps on hills.

Thanks so much everyone and yes I did use the search, no solid results :-D

I like the ncy variator. It has the lowest starting range. Will wheelie with provocation. No sacrifice in top end. You can buy the entire ncy super transmission kit for $185 ish from enviromoto. Get the gy6 150 kit. Having said that the stock trans is very capable completely stock. just toss in some 1500 rpm clutch springs and 11 or 12 gram sliders. The 11s pull hardest but do take away a little top end. Some people run 13s with good results. Depends on body weight. Don't bother with a Kevlar belt either. The stock bando belt is stout and it allows more revs off the line. Just my opinions though.

Not looking for faster take offs, looking for more top end. I actually gained impressive top speed gains with my Polini on my Ruckus.

Looking to give some more speed at the top for long flats.

Good luck.. most 125/150 buddy's top out around the 76 mark Some have seen just shy of 80 BMPH.
There have been different reports on what gears are in what and what fits with what.

My winter project list is getting longer by the day but a few things to think about..

- Final gear
- Tires.. Stock tires are only rated at 61 Also they are 10 inch tires!
- Brake upgrade.. faster you go the faster you want to stop

just some food for thought.

Does the NCY pull harder up hills than OEM at speed?

A bunch of us run the Dr. Pulley variator with good results and it's priced right, too.
~$100 at BuggyPartsnw. They also have the Koso for $65.

Here's a really detailed write-up comparing the stock, Dr. Pulley and NCY variators from Lostmycage.

Tocsik

What is the average range of roller weights folks are running with their Doctor Pulley Variator, so I would know what sets to order for tuning?

From what I've read, 11-13 is the range on the Buddy 125 and 150. You can get them in 0.5 gram increments but not from all sites.

I have stuck with 12's for several changes now after trying 11, 13 and a mix of 12/13 (trying to get to about 12.5). Whenever I have tried a mix of weights, it always feels like it takes on the characteristics of the heavier weight. YMMV.

EDIT: And I use Dr. Pulley sliders instead of rollers.

Hello Kev187;BuddyLand:

I agree with your suggestion of final gear modifications to increase top end speed. I believe every other modification changes how the scooter accelerates between zero and top end speed, but not much more top end speed, if any.

Whatever gear ratios the Buddy 150/170I has, put that into the Buddy 125. I am certain would increase top end speed. This would even be more true with the 161CC BBK.

Has anyone done final gear modifications to increase top speed on Buddy 125?

Thanks
