Do I need special 10W40 oil for my 125 Buddy? And if I need a filter, what is the recommended type, brand, etc?

the owner's manual specs for 15w-40; the shop manual mentions 15w-40 or a quality motorcycle oil (probably since most Genuine scooter dealers in the U.S. also sell/service motorcycles)...

examples of good 15w-40 are Shell Rotella-T, Chevron Delo 400 LE (both of these are conventional); Castrol SynBlend, Wolf's Head synthetic blend; Royal Purple, Amsoil (both are full synthetic)

I broke in the engine with conventional 15w-40, did an intermediate short-run oil change with a synthetic blend (Castrol SynBlend 10w-40 car oil), and recently switched to a 10w-40 full synthetic oil (Amsoil 10w-40 scooter oil)

there are various opinions on what to use and each person has their own reason for what they choose...I wanted a full synthetic oil, but not pay for expensive motorycle oil, so I chose the Amsoil scooter oil which I can get $4 per qt cheaper than Amsoil motorycle oil;

if you're implying if a conventional car oil can be used...perhaps, but I wouldn't leave it in there for a full 2000 miles oil change interval...car oils have different additive packages and might not give proper protection since the anti-wear additive levels in car oils are often lower than in heavy duty engine oils (15w-40) or motorcycle oils since the phospohorous in those additives can degradate catalytic convertors used on all modern automobiles; I did mention using Castrol SynBlend car oil, but I only had it in there for 500 miles as a step between conventional oil and full synthetic oil

basically, you can't go wrong with a conventional 15w-40 or conventional 10w-40 motorcycle oil and any synthetic-blend or full synthetic motorcycle or scooter oil offers advantages in cold starts and running in hot weather...you have to be the one to decide based upon your research and preferences

filters...Hi Flo Filtro HF 183, PGO oem replacement, Piaggio (for Vespa LX 150's) are a few that will work; a new one my dealer is trying out is Parts Unlimited 0712-0106 (cross references to Piaggio/Vespa/Aprilia scooters, but fits the Genuine Buddy) as an alternate to the HiFlo Filtro brand; I already have a ratchet adapter to fit the Hi Flo Filtro stuff so that's what I buy from my shop...

changed my oil recently in a 150. use 15w40 diesel oil and hand tightened the new filter until snug then gave it a good 3/4 turn of the wrench as some have suggested on this forum

seems ok and i checked the filter for tightness in the following days. all is well
