Custom-Fit Bell Star Carbon Helmet
Thinking about RoaringTodd's recent helmet thread, I thought you all might be interested in this item. Here is a really interesting article about custom-fit Bell Star Carbon helmets over on Motorcycle.com. They create a computer model of your skull and 3-D print a custom liner. Cool. Pricy. Comfortable. Safer? Did I mention, PRICY?

Well, a substantial part of the charge is a one-time charge to measure your head and create the computer model of your skull shape. I assume they will keep that information so the next helmet should just be the cost of the helmet, about $650. That's still high, I knowTocsik wrote:I'm not sayin' my brain isn't worth $1,150, but that's a lot of dough for a helmet.

I'm not making excuses or justifying even, I'm just thinking about the reality of a custom-fitted helmet. Since they are 3-D printing the liner, I would expect the price of this to come down as 3-D printers become cheaper and more commonplace. Mainly, I was interested in this article because of that, the impact of the 3-D printing tech. I've been expecting it to hit our sport at any minute and now it definitely has.
Edited to fix a typo - $650 rather than $750. Sorry.

I totally do not understand why this has not already happened except that, up to now, the technology has been too darned expensive. Now it seems like it should be a slam dunk. Anybody? I've also had the idea for a long time for a set of form-fitted "pucks" similar in concept to the knee pucks that motorcycle riders wear that would protect the rear cowls of Vespa scooters. Riders could remove them for rallies and shows and when they want their bikes to look their best and put them back on for daily riding chores. It seems like another no-brainer to me, but nobody has shown any interest when I've mentioned it. This may be another of those ideas that only sounds good to me.Tocsik wrote:right?! how 'bout some wicked-shaped scooter body panels?
