2008 Buddy 150 Italia
1st post!! But I've been an owner for 4 years.
2 years ago I lent my 2008 Buddy 150 Italia out to my brother in-law, who drove it for 18 month and put on 15000 miles. The scooter now has 18000 and is back in my possession and needs some electronics repair.
Scooter is not starting unless nudged, wedged, and tapped in different directions. i think it's a bad Stator/Pickup but anything ignition related could be the cause. I'm prepared to repair this scoot but was wondering. Has anyone tried an eBay Stator|CDI|Coil combo? It's not specifically for the Buddy, but is for a GY6/Clone. They look identical and for only $40 all three pieces bought. Its only $40 for all three, or I could go hunting down each piece one at a time from Genuine for a higher(?) cost.
Thoughts?

Oh. Ha... Ya that's not going to happen. Long story ultimately the scooter was abandoned by him in my garage. Likely cause it wouldn't run reliably. No spark most of the time.
I really don't mind putting a few bills down. The scooter only really needs it's ignition fixed to run again. After that maybe a tire or two. I wont drive it much. I've already invested $100 in paperwork.
So will the eBay stator|CDI|Coil be fine for $40 or will it catch fire and burn me?

That's is most fair. I've been doing some research and it looks like Genuine is using a fairly common GY6 engine in the 125/150 sizes. Perhaps the genuine used the design with better parts.

Mine has ~12,000 miles on it and still running strong. I had two oem stators go bad each with less than 5,000 miles on them. Also, this stator is about $20 cheaper than the oem one.

I'm also using the NCY stator from Scooterworks cited above with no problems.
It's not a bad price but Scooterworks puts a premium on shipping.
You might try this one from BuggyPartsNW. They're really good about answering questions regarding compatibility and their shipping is always $5.

That's hard to diagnose in a forum with only the above to go on.
Bad stators usually present as cutting out at higher revs; not so much with starting although anything's possible.
Give the guys here more info and you'll get more in return. There's a lot to learn from this place; it sure has helped me.
Does it start OK with the kickstarter and only gives you problems with electric start?
What do you mean it won't start "unless nudged, wedged and tapped"?
Once it starts, how does it run?
Is it different at idle vs. low speed vs. high speed?
Are there any other electrical symptoms such as horn, lights etc?

I have had to replace the stator twice. The first time the problem was that the scooter would die when I let off the gas. At first it would die sometimes when I would come to a stop. Then it didn't want to idle without a little gas. When it finally failed completely it was after I rode 8 miles wot then when I let off the gas it died. It wouldn't restart till it cooled down a little then started up and went a short distance and died as soon as I let off the gas. After that it would only run if you were accelerating. I was told that the generator part went bad.Tocsik wrote:

The second time the scooter got harder and harder to start, at first it was just a few extra seconds but by the end it took me almost 10 minutes to get it fired. Once running it was fine. Then it just wouldn't start. It had a very weak spark. This time I was told it was the pick-up coil that went bad, on the Buddy that is part of the stator assembly.

As far a cheap electrical parts you usually get what you pay for. I would suggest using parts from a reputable manufacturer.

Perhaps PGO designed and built a motor based on a GY6. Unlike most mainland GY6 clones the PGO motor used in the Buddy is pretty much bullet proof.ZeroClient wrote:That's is most fair.
