he was not overrated and yes he did drugs

some word say you can't choose life and riding, either. because riding is surely tempting fate as well as any drug could, but at this point i digress

He died of a potent over dose of bad heroin. Sorry for his family.

He'd done heroin when he was young, then quit and stayed off it for years, but recently relapsed. Addiction starts with poor judgment, but quickly becomes a form of mental and physical illness. Saying "I choose life and scootering" is like telling someone with a heart condition and depression to just make better choices.

Who knows what demons others fight? It appears that in his case he got a hold of a new and potent mixture of two drugs. Found with the needle
still in his arm. A sad loss of a great character actor. I would not rule out suicide in this case but we may never know.

Heroin is the great denominator. It takes the great and small and pulls them into the same gutter. I am sorry for his family.

I am so, so saddened by this. I liked him in Scent of a Woman then proceeded to love him in Boogie Nights and went out of my way to see him from there on. He really made everything he was in better. Not just a great actor but someone I would have loved to have known. Funny, smart, just loved the guy.

When people respond with anger that he had drug problems it makes me sad. Addiction is a terrible thing and difficult to grasp but anger has no place here. Wish I could have seen him in many performances to come. We've really been robbed of a fantastic actor.

And in the response to this specter of addiction, let those who have never felt that terrible bite know that they are blessed. And the rest of us, let us give thanks for every day we are free. R

I liked his performances both on screen and on stage. He was nominated for both Oscar and Tony awards (he won the Oscar).

I've seen how drugs and their abuse can take over someones life and usually the consequences aren't good. I used the word drugs because there are tons of people who are addicted to prescribed drugs as well as the illegal ones. It's the abuse that can become devastating. Not only to the person but to the loved ones and the ones that love the person abusing. There are people who abuse food and that too can lead to a fatal outcome. And their children and loved ones can find themselves adopting the same learned patterns of destruction.

In his case he had three small children all under the age of 10. What are the repercussions on their lives? What issues/stigmas will they confront. As victims sometimes do will they blame themselves for not being "enough" to prevent daddy from killing himself? My heart goes out to them.

What Moses said pretty much sums it up.
