Some Street Cred

What's maybe not so odd to some of you (Buddy owners), some of the vintage scooter guys really like the Buddy. This I find a little odd because they despise the modern Vespas as well as my Kymco P150.

Anyone have some insight?

Maybe ScooterDave could offer some insight... he's about the most qualified person I can think of to answer that question.

I think the Buddy reminds the Vespatisti of the old "smallframe" Vespas.

The ultimate street cred would be to get some props in Scoot! Magazine. If it wasn't for the advertisements, there would be virtually no modern scooters in that mag.

Once you get away from the "scooter crowd", the fact is that most scooters out on the street are ... modern scooters, aren't they? So the real street cred is already there, you're riding it, on the street :)

Honestly, I have no idea why vintage riders would give extra props to the Buddy, of all things. I'd assume that an Asian modern would rank far below a European one but who knows? I understand the reasons for those biases, but think they're kind of arbitrary and pointless.

MOD is for Modern!

Scoot! is very much an "enthusiasts" magazine which tries to cater to both the vintage and modern crowds—no easy feat. The new issue devotes a number of pages to modern scoots: the 50cc "shootout"; the SYM tour. They usually have reviews of new models, too.

ScooterWorld is a bit more modern-centric. It's bimonthly and is free. Unfortunately, it doesn't have scooter girl pin-ups. :(

This is based on what? I would disagree with you.

i'll second that.... i am actually liking the aesthetics of the buddy less and less the more small frames i've gotten to see and ride... the thing that i continue to appreciate about the buddy, though, is the fact that it is solid and dependable....
and the less i like the looks of the buddy, the less my buddy looks like a buddy...

The like the size, engine, handling, & reliabilty. Of course they hate the plastic. The vintage guys out here for the most part are pretty cool.

I have had a few vintage people interested in my Buddy and a couple even took it for a little test ride. One guy was looking for a first scoot for his daughter, he liked it, the other people seemed to like it...for a modern scooter. Nobody else had anything bas to say, but they may have just been being polite! The only thing that I can think of is that it rides it's distant cousin Stella's coat tails a bit and stays out of trouble that way!

Who cares what they think? It's amazing how every group breaks down into subgroups and cliques

I already suffered snarks about my utility bicycle(dutch style bicycle) from the roadie/one speeder crowd.

I'm used to being looked down upon from the "cool crowd".

That's good you have that, because I'm not sure that having your picture in Scoot! magazine counts towards your street cred ;)

PS - your bike looked much shinier in the magazine than it does in your forum pictures.

I have to admit...it seldom looks shiny. I hate to stop long enough to wash it.

Having it twice in the same issue does.

Not exactly the cover of Rolling Stone :P . Are you going to "buy 5 copies for my mother"? I feel like breaking out in song and crooning that old Dr. Hook song. :bleh: (Coyotes howl when I start to sing.)

Any "roadie" or "fixie rider" who would talk smack about your "dutch style" ride ia a jerk and should be ignored imeadiatly, they actualy fear your style, laugh at them with confidence...JMO of course....

Last week during a ride, my Buddy with all 220lbs of me, left 2 LX's in the dust. We went on I-5 briefly to go across the Coronado Bridge. I was able to do 50 on the incline and 60 across the middle of the bridge.

I was in the back but caught up to the leaders and their 'kit'ed vintage Vespas and Lambrettas. When we stopped on the other side, they asked me how fast I was going. They were surprised that the Buddy was that fast.

Of course one of them said that the Buddy would be a great "rat" bike.

And no I don't care what people think about what I ride. Especially if they are in my rear view mirror  .
