Buddy 50 Derestrict Speed

Post by bpfeil »

My friend and I purchased two Buddy 50's this last week. We negotiated the derestricting into the price. He already has a Roughhouse 50 and is question if we are actually derestricted or not.

Can anyone with a Buddy 50 that is derestricted comment on the speed they are getting on their speedometer? I'm seeing it stop around 40 and I am 225 lbs.

I'm around 230 Lbs and the speed you're indicating is probably about accurate. If it was truly restricted you wouldn't be able to go any faster than 30mph. Best bet is if you are tall or just a bigger person and want to go faster, you should either buy a scooter with a larger engine or get the stage 1 upgrade kit from scooterworks.

Thanks for the response. That's what I was figuring, but we don't totally trust the shop that we bought them from either. We're going to run some tests tomorrow with the Roughhouse and the Buddy to see the difference.

Like ender07 stated, without doing transmission mods your going as fast as it will go. Just keep in mind that if you decide to go that route you can toss your two year warranty down the toilet.

And welcome to the forums :D there is always someone here that can help.

I am the friend... I also have a rough house and it is much faster... I know that the speedometer is not correct, but I am seeing much faster speeds on the RH.

This post says very high speeds.

Keep in mind that a new scooter isn't going to be able to hit the same top speeds as one that's broken in. I'm a little over 200lbs and 40-45 (on the speedo) is the flat-ground, no-wind max speed on my derestricted B50.

We had a good day of riding today. Weather was beautiful here in southern MN. My two buddies and I (2 Roughhouses and my Buddy 50) went off on a ride around town. I was able to keep up with them pretty well on flats although they were faster than me. I believe it's because of the taller tires. I was able to climb hills better than they were, probably the smaller tires.

With all of that said I do believe that my Buddy is derestricted. It was nice to have a good baseline to compare to. It did ride differently today than yesterday which had to be because of getting broken in more as well.

Your speedo is about 10% optimistic so it's likely you're topping out at an actual 35 - 36 MPH. Get yourself a GPS and take it along for the ride to see your actual top speed. It will work just carrying it in your pocket. Also, how tall are you? At 225 lbs. that may be slowing you down a bit especially with a 50 cc engine. A windshield is a good way to pick up a couple extra MPHs and it's much less invasive and less expensive than messing with your drive train. Won't invalidate your warranty either! Good luck and ride safe,
