Dealer Service...ugh

Why does everyone on this planet try to screw you over?

Went to a dealer today for my 1800 mile service. First they quoted me $200, then $240 because they said, without even looking out the bike, that I needed my "belt and rollers replaced". When I called them on it the price magically went down to $137.

if I remember correctly...the owner's manual indicates 'inspection' of the CVT belt at 3600 miles with 'replacement' as needed; very good of you to know your vehicle and call them on it;

maybe some of the lower end Chinese scooters require CVT belt replacement alot sooner due to lower quality of belt materials; they might be grouping all the scooters into one group without remembering the different service schedule for the Genuines

If your belt and rollers need changing at 1800 miles, then something is wrong with your transmission or the original installation.

How often are you having service done?

And, BTW, not everyone tries to screw you over. There are some fine dealers out there!

He told me I needed them replaced BEFORE HE EVEN LOOKED AT THE BIKE!

That makes me think he'd be shady enough to charge for the labor and not even actually do it.

There is a regular service interval for belt and rollers, so it is not unreasonable to point out to you at which service belt and rollers is likely due without examining the bike. That interval is not 1800 miles however. (my manual indicates checking the belt at 4000 miles and likely replacement at 6000 miles)

I bought a bad tire from a Sears Auto/Firestone for an 84 crown vic years ago. It was causing my car to pull to and wear out my other new/good tires. Before honoring the warranty on the tire, they did an inspected and told me i'd have to have a laundry list of parts on my car replaced because they were worn and were the "real cause" of my tires prematurely balding. The parts they listed were all my shocks, tie rod ends etc... which I had previously replaced myself less than a year prior. While they had it up on the lift I pointed and asked them "you're telling me those shocks are bad"... mechanic said "Yes". I had a lot of fun that day calling them out on BS. When it was all said and done they didn't go back on their word, that would be admitting they lied, and I was stuck with a poorly manufactured tire that constantly was pulling.

Lesson learned... never buy tires from Sears. I've never had to take a vehicle to a shop for anything other than tires.. and STILL they try to screw you.

As a former Loss Prevention Manager at Sears, I would say NEVER let them touch your car for any reason. I can't even tell you how many times we were paying to fix people's cars because the tech did something stupid. Good rule of thumb is not to trust anyone who's making $8/hr to work on your car. They don't exactly attract quality employees. Sadly, mistakes can be made anywhere though... even dealerships hire morons.
