DIY buddy blackout

Post by lovemysan »

I just finished blacking out my buddy. I couldn't stomach the black out kit's $140+shipping cost. Which does not include mirrors. Mirrors would be an extra $50. Initially I bought some plastic rated spray paint but found the application to blotchy. I purchased some VHT wheel paint in satin black and used this on all my parts. I did 4 coats. The VHT is very forgiving. Sanding the chrome parts was very time consuming. A friend came over and spent hours prepping the small parts. I found the buddy chrome to be very durable. We dry sanded all parts thoroughly with 320 grit wet or dry paper then followed up with scotch bright pads. The vht wheel paint is fast drying allowing all 4 coats in under an hour. Parts were dry enough to install after an hour or so. I like the faded plastic and the bumps/ bruises. I had already epoxied the original headlamp, top cover and trim ring from prior accident damage. We sanded the worst out of the trim ring but decided to leave obvious signs of repair. I like rough and loved look. I'm curious to see how long this rattle can paint last. I don't have very high expectations. I painted the yellow ring on the brake disc. I'm pretty sure at some point it will get hotter than the 250f rating of the paint.

I also bought an a12 cam and taida valve springs. I intend to have the head shaved another .010. I removed some material from the combustion chamber to clean it up and unshroud the valves. I'm installing a koso wideband to get it all tuned. Next up will be a mikuni flat side 24 or 28mm, haven't decided yet. After that I'll call it done. Maybe a 220 mm front disc and NCY forks someday........

Is that a set of gearing too? If so, what did you use?

the paint looks great, I may take it to heart when redoing my Helix! I hope it stays looking like that for ages.

No thats a standard GY6 cam shaft. When installing on a buddy you have to press the cam gear off the buddy oem camshaft because it has fewer teeth.
