Cold weather running prob

Post by Buddy_wannabe »

anyone have any thoughts on this ?

I live in MN and when I start scoot up in cold weather it starts fine , it will idle more or less normal , then idle up for a bit and then back down , it will take off just fine , but when I get to a stop sign/light it has a tendency to kill or want to kill. I can usualy start it right back up but I have had a couple times that I had to work at it. Once it is good and warmed up it doesnt seem to be a problem.

any thoughts ? .... Adjust carb?

If it runs fine once warmed up (after it does once), I'd leave the carb and idle alone. That will affect its normal running after it warms up. Could you warm it up more before setting out?

Same thing here in Eastern PA on the colder days. You just need to warm it up a little longer unless you want to get into re-jetting it.

This link is pretty detailed explanation on jetting.

If you take the time to browse through this thread, there's so really great stuff as well.

I have same problem in MN but I do know warming it up makes a difference.

I have not added Stabl yet because I can't find a place that carries it.

Not sure if that would make a difference while riding it or if that is just for storage. I've read some people use it all winter while they continue to ride.

I live in Sauk Rapids, MN and I have had a simular problem, yet it never died only idles very slowly and after a good warm up there is no problem. I suggest a longer warm up. As for Stabil, you can find it at Mills Fleet Farm and I believe Checker Auto and Napa carry it. Another very good product is SeaFoam which should be at the same stores and I saw some at Scooterville too. My boat mechanic told me to add either to every gas tank to keep my boat motor carb from gunking up. I have added SeaFoam to all of my gas engines from lawn mower, to snowblower. SeaFoam recommends about 1 oz per gallon of gas or for me a tankful and hasn't hampered performance at all as I still ride my scoot several times a week yet and plan to until they salt the roads. Good Luck.

Thanks for info on who else carries Stabl.

I know Scooterville does but it is not exactly a quick trip for me...about an hour there and hour back again.

Please Clarify: SeaFoam recommends about 1 oz per gallon of gas or for me a tankful.

You put 1 oz of SeaFoam in the Buddy tank even though it holds 1.7 gallons?

What happens if too much is put in the gas tank? 1 oz isn't very much.

You put the SeaFoam in all the time or just during Fall/Winter when you are actually riding?

What about RingFree? Anyone familar with this?

I use the SeaFoam when I reduce my riding time. I ride daily in the summer but as the cooler weather comes my riding slows down. My boat mech told me that gas starts getting bad in about 2-3 weeks and to add the SeaFoam when I don't run a tank out in that time. I would think you could add a bit more SeaFoam or Stabil then what the can states at "about 1 oz per gal". I would think 2oz to 1.7 gal would not hurt. But that's my educated guess only.
I'm not familuar with RingFree.

Now you did it!!!! I had to go in the garage to read the SeaFoam can. "1 pint is good for 8 to 25 gallons (averaging 1oz per gal)". That's a big range of useage...so 2oz per tank of gas should be just fine. There now I can go to bed. Good night all.

Whether Stabl or SeaFoam it sure doesn't take much but I should add that each time to the 1.7 gal tank each time I ride.

Someone else posted they fill their portable two gallon gas can that they fill up at the pump with Stabl at that time. Then it is already premixed when they top off their Buddy gas tank. If the portable gas tank is used within 2--3 weeks I would think that would work to have it premixed.

Comments on that?
