Modern Buddy

Hi All,

My girlfriend was in an unfortunate accident on her scooter, and while a little banged up, she's mostly okay at this point. However, her Sym HD200 isn't and the insurance company totaled it. They allowed us to keep it though and I was going to sell it as is/for parts. While it's pretty banged up, most of the damage seems to be just to the body- a lot of plastic broken off or cracked, the headlamp part broke off, etc. My question is- what would a totaled bike be worth? Obviously it depends on the bike, this is a 2006 Sym HD200 (only about 8600 miles on it though) and I know if this was a Harley or vintage Vespa, it'd be worth a lot more to someone. Still, I think someone could get a lot out of this bike, even if just parting it out, which I'm too lazy to do. The brakes and battery are both new, and the engine is still in good condition. What does everyone think I could get for it?

Sorry to hear about the accident. At least your girlfriend is OK. The scooter is replaceable.

Totaled scooter is probably not worth much as a vehicle. Even if someone could replace the tupperware for cheap, the salvage title process is a pain, at least here in NY. I'd go with breaking it down and parting it out on eBay.

I'm not sure if there are Sym specific boards, but between that and Ebay you might try parting it out.

Sym had some distribution difficulties for a while and some people may have need of the parts.

Check if there's a motorcycle salvage yard in your area. These places buy bikes and part them out.

Some dealers will also buy a bike for parts if the engine and other major components are still usable. Likewise, you can sell the bike whole as a parts bike rather than parting it out yourself, assuming you don't want to spend the time for disassembly and piecemeal sales. Try an ad on Craigslist or similar.
