Modern Buddy

Thinking about a buying buddy 125 and a large GiVi top rack on the rack. I can't seem to find the "max weight limit" and also what you can really load on it before it breaks. Anyone got any wisdom they would be willing to share?

when i got my genuine topcase there was a paper inside that advised not to put more than 10 lbs. in it.

Which Buddy rear rack do you have? The new design or the original?

I have a Givi 370 that I carried 13lbs max in it (but I think 10lbs is the official limit). The original Buddy rear rack broke while nothing was in the GIVI. I think it could have been weakened when the ratchet straps to attach it to the Versa Haul were tightened too much. (my guess)

I have ordered and waiting for the new design rear rack to come in. (There is a post on this site showing the original design and the new design--once you see it you will see why the original design is not as stable as the new one.)
In the meantime I bought the Cortech Sport Saddlebags and find them useful. The only difficulty I found at first was putting the centerstand down, but after a couple of weeks I got the hang of it...you can't see the lever for the centerstand because the saddlebag blocks it. However, I would not give up the saddlebags because of the inconvenience. After using it, your foot gets to know where the lever is.

Does the new design rack have a greater distance from the back to the stop bar at the front? It looks like it from the pictures and I could use a longer base with the Prima bag. If it is longer, I will get one on order.

I don't have it yet so I assume the new design. My dealer had to order. one. I actually don't have the buddy yet was thinking about it and wanted some specifics on different parts of the buddy.

Specifically state that you want the "new" design or you could end up with the original design.

The new design for the rear rack is better but you still have to be careful about the weight issue. I put my Nolan helmet in it when not riding and will carry no more than 10 lbs. The real problem is the plastic body on the Buddy. The plastic cracks and can't support the weight of a heavier bike made with metal. The Buddy is great. It's fast and easy to handle ( the 125) but the rear really can't handle a lot of weight.
