Rattle or sputter when accelerating

Post by mjm1374 »

Over the last week I've had a growing noise when I accelerate I can't track down. It happens when I get to around 40mph. There is a rattle or sputter, its hard to really put an exact sound to it. There is no loss in acceleration or any other side effect but it is getting louder and happens consistently. I've loosed for loose parts and any leakage signs but nothing.

Any ideas?

Does the noise go away or lessen above 40mph? If so, it's probably something that's resonating with that frequency of the engine, which may or may not be a problem with the engine itself. If not, I'd have it checked out by a mechanic. I had a similar problem with my old scooter, which turned out to be a cracked cylinder.

How many miles on the scooter?
Original roller weights?
Any recent service or repair?
Stock exhaust or after-market?

A lot more info is needed to provide you with any help.
It could be a dirty CVT, worn rollers, loose head bolts on the exhaust flange or any number of things.

the rattle does go away at about 45-50mph, But I have checked for loose equipment. Bike has about 15K miles, it does have an aftermarket (Prima) exhaust. I do most of the service myself but might be time to take it in.

Thanks.
