No more scootin' for a while, maybe a long while

Post by Tam Tam »

The last several months have been busy beyond belief, hence no real interaction, not even reading the forum, but here goes:
So, after four great years with two great scooters (the Buddy Blackjack, all chromed & dressed & LED kits, and the 09 2 stroke stella, racks & rails & chrome bits all over), a great change swept over my wife & my's life...
She had to switch jobs in her company (without any real advance notice from the big bosses) and we moved up to the country between Bee Caves and Marble Falls. We had spent the last year outside of Boerne, so both scoots got a lot of use as 40 mile round trip commuters for my job. But where we are now, to get anywhere, it is 70mph hill country highways.
 As good as those scoots were, they would not have been able to keep up out here. Heck, one year of country riding had already taken its toll on both scoots.
So, just before we made the final trip up to our new place, I rode the stella, and my hunny trucked in the blackjack to the shop we got them both from. With heavy heart, I traded them both (and a bit of cash) for a deep red 09 Honda Shadow Spirit 750. One owner (an Army officer who mothballed it right) and only 1600 miles.
Now I know why a friend once said, "After 2-3 days of riding my sportster, I get on my stella and remember how much easier this is to handle"
I would have loved to have kept one or both scoots but 1- it was not the best fiscal decision, and 2- both would have only putted around the state park nearby, and I would not have been able to really ride them like I used to.
When I did the math for the heck of it, and decided I did get the most out of both scoots, I did feel better...
So, after that long winded set up, I really did want to be sure and thank everyone here on the forum. The guys and gals with the tech advice who helped me thru repairs and breakdowns, the folk who shared very funny or poignant or cautionary tales of their experiences, and those folk who slapped my wrist or corrected me when I was being an ass; A very sincere thanks to you all for helping me to ride and understand my scooters and fellow riders as well.
I will still pop in from time to time to read and look at the awesome scoots here (It is hard to describe - the shadow is a cool looking cruiser, chromy and deep apple red, but even when I look at mine in our driveway, it just doesn't grab my eyes the way a real sharp scooter does...don't get me wrong, it rides like a champ and will be uber reliable, and how nice to be doing 70 uphill and still have more power...but dammit, scooters still look cooler to me still lol)
So, not so much a final goodbye, but "Hey, not scooting anymore for the indefinite, but still dig scooters and so still kinda wanna be in the know."
Happy Scootering to you all!

Just don't be a 'stranger' you're still on two wheels no matter what kind they are.

Honda Shadows have been around a loooong time and are pretty bullet proof. You'll have a lot less maintenance!

I'm in hill country too, so I feel your pain on that, but at least the speed here isn't an issue; anyone doing 70 on my roads is asking for a deer through the windshield.

Sorry to see you go, but I think you made the right decision. I'm a big fan of the particular model bike you got. I almost bought a used one myself a couple years ago. Here's a tip I got from reading the boards about that bike.

Good Luck! Please feel free to drop in and tell us what the transition to a motorcycle is like. Lots of folks here are secretly very curious.

You said it all - it really is just about two wheels.

Sorry you had to sell. I have lived in areas at times where a scooter would not have been of any use to me. If you run across some good scootin' roads in the Hill Country, be sure an post them for us.
