New Buddy 170i Owner Experiences

Post by GregsBuddy »

Purchased the scoot two weeks ago tomorrow.
Was given the usual 30-day, 20% discount on accessories and purchased a SOFT top case, top case chrome rack, chrome front rack, GOGO saddle bags and YSS rear shock. I've installed the top case rack, top case and shock myself.
Road the bike home at purchase and found that the rear drum was warped.
The dealer removed the wheel/drum/tire from another showroom scoot and installed it on my scoot. Fixed the warp but has a ticking sound every revolution. Upon further inspection, the rear tire is now a Cheng Shin and the front is a Maxxis.
Returned to the dealer to swap the rear tire and repair the lock on the SOFT top case. The response was, "the scooter won't know the difference in tires" and "you know you purchased an inexpensive top case...". Not what I wanted to hear, and yes, I can feel the difference in rear tires.
The YSS shock is really nice and provides an improved ride. I suggest it.
It's great to have a top case to compliment the under seat storage.
Will likely replace the fork tubes or tubes and triple clamp next.
Now have 132 miles.
I'm breaking the scoot in according to the Owner's Manual. Gently. Will change the oil at 200 miles. It has used a small amount of oil and I will keep a close eye on it for the next 68 miles before changing it and filter.
It is now idling slightly slower, which I find a bit strange since the engine should be "loosening up" and I'd expect it to idle faster.
Using premium 91 octane fuel.
This thing is really cool; light, flickable, and the front brake seems to be already broken in and strong. The rear drum and shoes are mating much more slowly. I'm intentionally using the rear brakes as much as possible to get it broken in and working strongly (I hope).
Love the scoot. Not too hot on dealer at the moment; subject to change.

Hi Arnette.
One in the North Bay area.
Don't want to say which at the moment.
Do you have a good one in SF?

I put a Soft case on an 09 Buddy. No it's not a Givi or a Shad but I thought it was a pretty good case for the price. Plus you can get colors that match the rest of the panels.

The case seems fine and a good value, overall. I'm just not happy with the lock that didn't work out of the box, and the dealer's response. The dealer- owner saw the problem at the same time I saw it; When we first opened it together. She tried closing it without the key and then noticed there was something wrong. I thought I could tighten the retaining bolt when I got home, but that didn't work. When I returned, the technician worked on it and then stated "...it's a low-cost top box...". I said what I wanted was a new lock. He didn't say anything and got a quiet.
Sent an email to Scooterworks to see if they will replace the lock. Seems like a reasonable request. They sell the lock for ~$30.00 on their site. Maybe the locks are prone to failure.
Otherwise happy scoot guy!
