Being from an area with nothing but sun I am also interested - but I personally have not input on it other than wanting one.
That is a really cool find it appears to use the same float technology as the battery tender could anyone confirm that as well?

I don 't have one, but I live off-grid, on solar power, so it would be a natural for me. My only concern is that it IS, in fact, weather proof. Right now I do have a Battery Tender Jr. available for use - I haven't been using it, and I just started up my scoot this morning - alas, I haven't been able to ride because my dirt road has been snow/ice packed for a week, and I don't yet have any kind of ramp or trailer etc. to haul my bike out to the pavement with, which has been dry for days! -a quick push of the button and it purrred into action.

It claims to be fairly weather-proof.

I'd like something like this if it were portable and could charge a dead battery enough to start the scoot in, say, a couple hours. I've seen some folding solar panels that are pretty interesting, but they're meant for small electronics and are reportedly very slow to charge.

These things are only for trickle charging (mili-amps) to keep the battery alive and well. They won't come close to charging a dead battery. You'd have to have a lot of wattage from panels to do anything like that. Probably not practical.

I have a power outlet solar charger that came with one of our VW's. It is meant to maintain the battery. I guess it would work if our scoot was left outside.

I have one of those, too. Damn thing never worked for me (for my car). Could be my outlet, though.
