Battery post screws

I'm a little late getting the scooter going this season. I had to get a new battery for it and the budget didn't allow that purchase until now. I got the new battery and put it in but the screws won't tighten to hold the wires onto the battery posts. They just spin in the posts holes. I was able to start my scooter and it stayed running when I put the cover on. I am concerned about the wires coming loose while I am riding. Would this cause the scooter to stall while I'm riding - say if I hit a bump? Or would it just knocked out the lights? I have a 09 Buddy 125

This happened to me.

When I bought my used '07 the cables were held by bolts with minimal friction (and thus weird no-start behaviors).

My solution (perhaps obvious) was to find some screw/nut washer combos in the odd screw jar that fit the posts and cables. If you don't have such a cache, your local home improvement store or auto parts store will have something. I put the nuts inside the boxy part of the posts to keep them from spinning. I sprayed them with contact cleaner to stave off any bimetallic interaction.

Try dropping by your local battery store and asking nicely if you could just have a pair. If they're smart, they'll take the long view that you will come back later to buy your next battery. They probably have spares laying around

Thank you for your replies. I did head over to my local hardware store. The person there set me up with the nuts and even gave me a hint which made it easy to assemble since I am a fumble fingers. I was told to put a piece of paper or some toothpicks underneath the nut to raise it up a bit. This makes it easier to screw into. I used a folded up bit of paper and then pulled it out before I tightened the screw. It did make it easy- even for for fumble fingers like me.
