Hooligan: Engine light & fast idle & deer

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, so I rode the Hooligan the 18 miles to the gym and worked out - ruuh. On the way back It showed four bars so I headed for the gas station. At a stop, it stalled, but restarted easily. I continued and saw the check engine light was on and noticed the idle was fast. I filled it up and rode the nine miles to home thinking about what could be wrong.

(Aside: coming in the entrance to my development I was focused on the road and hence did not see the deer jump out until it shot across my bows. I hit the brakes, controlled a short front wheel skid and nearly clipped the deer's rear ankle. Pay attention, Orton, I said to myself)

Anyway the Hooligan was still idling fast so I put it away. This afternoon, I went out and did my usual Primary Diagnostic, to whit, I stared dumbly at it for a few moments. I took it for a short ride and Lo! and Behold! the EMS light was out and the engine ran normally.

I guess my Primary Diagnostic worked.

Any ideas, boys and girls?

PS
I had done 70 miles on the tank of gas but there might have been water of crud therein.

It sounds like a lean-run condition. Maybe an air bubble in the fuel filter from running low? That seems unlikely to me. Could also be something with the idle-air system on the intake. You'll have to ask/wait for something from someone who knows a bit about the EFI unit on these bikes.

The Lord of the Deer, attempting to delay you just long enough to miss your deer.
