Modern Buddy

Hey all, Just bought at used '13 buddy 50cc 2t with 877 miles. It now has 1177miles. I have really been enjoying it but have a concern. at 45 bmph and up I hear a high pitch winning sound that becomes more pronounced when I turn my head to the left, any ideas, is this normal?

Check the oil level in the gearbox. If it's low it'll whine like a hungry kid. Also, even though your scoots milage is low, I'd check the condition of the belt. Lastly, check to see if something is stuck between the tire and fender/mudguard.

Thanks, found fill cap between inner primary and hub no dipstick. Looked wet inside. Fill cap cover on outside with caked oil. Is there a dipstick or is it like a car diff fill to over flow?

Is Fran Drescher riding cupcake? That may explain things.

Do not fill to overflow! There is no dipstick. You have to pour a measured amount into the gearbox, but I'm not sure how much it should be for your Buddy 50. The gearbox should be completely drained first, then fill it with the amount of gearbox oil specified.

Your owners manual should tell you how much oil is required. If you don't have one, check the Technical Library forum here on MB for it. Or, a knowledgeable member might chime in with an intelligent response.

update: changed final drive gear oil 85/140 90cc (irrigation syringe worked perfectly) no change... fluid looked good some super fine metallic dust but nothing alarming. I am afraid I am setting off on a wild goose chase.

I have an 08 50 that usually sounds a little whiny or gnashy, when the rain stops I'll take a spin and see if it sounds like you describe, at least ya got some fresh gear oil in....

Ok, rode around for about 45 minutes or so, no whining or gnashing at speed no matter which direction I turned my head...Mine whines a little on deceleration, kind of a descending jrrjrrjrrjrrjrrjrrjrrjrrjrr, I'm thinking that's just the tranny slowing the motor down when I let off the throttle....Does your whine change pitch or volume at all when you decelerate or turn? How about your tires? I know around here I can hear a little difference in the "pitch" of the tires when I drive off of asphalt and onto concrete or vice versa...

Ok well maybe it should be of concern then... When I decelerate it stops my buddy max is 49 bmph so a few seconds after I let off the throttle it is below 45. All the roads i ride on are asphalt. No turning or weaving doesn't change it. Its a great little scoot. I'm new to all this. Maybe I'll leave it with dealer for the next 7-10 days so they can ride it. Ugh. They don't have the best reputation. Maybe I should just listen to wife and slow down. But what's the fun in that.
Final drive seems ok.
How tight should back brake be?
Wheel bearing would probably be at all speeds.
Only other thing is rubber hose connected to head shroud is lodged between primary and what I think is engine mount maybe it's causing a whistle at speed. Ill see if I can post a pic.
Any other thoughts or suggestions?

I always drain the gearbox into a measuring cup and refill that amount. I think some oil remains in the hub(albeit a small amount). Use a measure syringe to refill oil. It's makes life alot easier.

Edit-Derp you already did that. Nice job. It's a good thing you did since there was metal in the oil. It was probably the first time it was changed.
