Modern Buddy

New to the forum and scooters( though I've owned motorcycles for 35 years). Just bought 2 new Buddy's a 125 and a 150 and changed oil in both to Motul 7100 at 180 miles. I know there are a lot of different opinions on what oil to use but I swear both scooters run smoother on Motul 7100 then what came in them. At around 35-40 mph, on both scooters there was what I will call a vibration pattern or wave,( not sure what correct term would be) that is much less noticeable with Motul. Call me crazy, but wife agrees. Was hard for me too spend that much on Motul, but I think I will use it from now on!

I like Motul oil myself, but I think the important thing is to use a quality synthetic oil (there are a number of them out there). These oils are much more stable in small air cooled engines and retain their lubricating ability for substantially longer than conventional dino oils.

Motul guy here. I've used 710(best 2-stroke oil out there), 7100, and 300v(double ester). All very good oils, but as Dooglas said, as long as you use a quality synthetic(that meets spec, most do) your good. Lots of people love Rotella because it's cheaper and easy to find(Walmart).

180 miles is a bit early IMO, but the rings should be seated, so no worries. I wouldn't try to stretch the mileage much on the new oil since some metal fragments may still be shaving off into your oil.

Oh yeah, change your hub oil at around 500 miles. There will be metal in it. No need for syntetic, since the temp and pressure isn't extreme. But, it you feel inclined, Motul makes a synthetic 75w140 that would probably last the life of your scooter, LOL.

Both scooters I bought were never licensed or titled and are 2009 models! The dealer serviced them the day I bought them but I just thought I should change oil myself and figured 180 miles should have rings seated. I've been told that it's an old wives tale that you need to run dino till break in is over, so who knows?

Like I said in my post, the rings should be seated. I agree with you. I also believe rings can be seated with synthetic. As has been explained to me, it's not so much that synthetic is "slicker" it just stays "slicker" longer. I stand by the statement that some metal wear(shavings) are still going on at that mileage. I would probably change again in the 1500-2000 range. Just my opinion and I'm not a mechanic.

My Buddy150 is a 2009 I bought in 2011. Model year isn't as important with PTWs in general.
