Battery wellness while at work and in the cold

Post by thepezident »

Hey all,

Got a Battery Tender from Santa and have the Buddy plugged in while sitting in my garage.

I'm wondering though, if I ride to work and it's a little chilly out... will I harm the battery being in the cold and not having it plugged in?

Will I come out of work to a dead battery?

If your battery is in good shape and your lil stator is charging jes' fine you will have no issues. I never have in the year and a half I've had mine. I don't even use a battery tender. Never needed to.

Yeah, I'm with Keys. I have no place to plug in a tender so I never use one. As long as you're riding and as long as each ride is long enough to charge, you'll be fine. I have a 15 minute commute every morning and my Buddy has never failed to start, even after sitting for 8 or 9 hours in sub freezing temperatures. Your battery should be good for a month or two of non-use and still fire your bike right up, without a tender.

If you have starting issues under either of these scenarios, something else is going on. Batteries on bikes are weak links, but not that weak.

I need a battery tender for my car. Seriously. My Buddy, however, has never had an issue (even in the teens). =)

Interestingly, I couldn't ride for a couple of weeks so Sparkee wouldn't auto start, but still had enough juice to kick-start. So I stopped auto starting for awhile and kept kickstarting, then taking it for a 30 min. ride every chance I got and it's back to full strength. I can auto start now but I kinda like kickstarting now that I have the hang of it! :bat: The temps have been so crazy I have had plenty of chances to get in a short ride now and then.
