The Scooter Cannonball Run is a coast to coast endurance event for scooters. It is a test of both rider and machine that covers 3700 miles and takes in some of the best motorcycle roads on the North American continent. It will be run as a time/distance/regularity rally where points are awarded based on miles completed and the ability to maintain the standard pace.

July 5 - 15 2016 Fernandina Beach, Florida to Mukilteo, Washington - 3,723 miles over 11 days

If I could get the time off of work I would add an oil cooler and a fuel cell to my Buddy and likely win it with handicaps.

Hell, I'd be happy running the first two days then going home! Maybe next time

Above all that, the main looming problem is that I'd be faced with the task of losing 30+lbs to make it the entire rally.

If you were at Amerivespa it was selected as Best rat Bike

It now has a 1979 highly modified P200 motor, 225ccs, estimated 23 hp and a ton of torque for hills. I built this motor specifically for the CBR.

Well a 2014 Buddy 125 would handicap in at about 102% handicap. I should be right at 100%...with an additional 100ccs and twice as many power strokes!

Buddys have completed the CBR...some have also burnt out stators and broken cranks. Not to mention belts, tires, rollers, variators.

Where will all you riders be staying the last night of the run and what's the route for the last day? I live about 1 hour south of Mukilteo, WA your final destination. I'm thinking of joining in somewhere along your last day's route and riding with you to Mukilteo if that's OK with the CBR's rules. I'd be riding my '14 170i Hooligan.

The hotels have not been confirmed yet so we don't know yet.

The CBR is run on public roads. If you just want to ride along for a day there is no need to register.

One thing to remember is that this is a "timed endurance event" Personally I enjoy when someone rides along...especially if they have local knowledge!

One thing to remember is that most of the time CBR riders are solo or in small groups. I like when people ride along but honestly...I'm not going to slow down or wait on a stop. A gas stop is fill the tank, fill the reserve, add 2T oil, slam a bottle of water and go.

Checkpoint. Stop, take photo, write the time on the tape on the head set,
hit my Spot to send a checkpoint message, slam a bottle of water.....go. Total time hopefully less than 1 minute. At a state line I may get off the scooter for a shot...total 2 minutes!

OK. When you have a firm itinerary and route for the last day, please let me know. At 82, I'm probably too old to do the entire CBR but I would at least have the satisfaction of completing the final day. Thanks!

Still paying off last year! (Sort of kidding.)

Maybe 2018.

I keep toying with the idea, but I have a few hurdles to deal with:

1) My job won't let me take more that a week off without executive approval. I did good in participating in the 2008 BABE Rally, but corporate culture was a lot different when we were smaller. I'd hate to lose a job over a scootering event that nobody else in the office would see value in.

2) I kinda want to be dumb and take the scooter that got me back into scootering, a battered red '87 Elite 80. Yes, it's only 3hp and gets smoked by more modern 50cc machines, but I think it's got a good mix of dead simple operation, consistent (albeit low) performance and a surprisingly comfortable stock seat. There are recognizable shortcomings that could be addressed and I've spent a lot of time getting it back to better-than-running shape after it got thrashed while on loan. I really feel like I owe this clump of awkward polygons on wheels a grand adventure and that it could show respectably with some proper preparation.

3) Money seems like a big mountain. I'd have to give up on rebuilding scoots for awhile and sell a few off in order to start pooling funds. At this time, I'd rather be in the garage bringing my Gyro S, Allstate Compact and other little weirdos back to life. I'd also have to forego some of the pricey performance mods I wanted to try on the Stella once the warranty expires; don't want to wait until then to buy the parts, as they might be unavailable by then...made that mistake on the Yager. Maybe once I've got a few done and have put some miles on them I'll be able to make some decisions on them.

4) I don't think I have the competitive drive that seems essential for this sort of event. I'm all for doing some miles, but I burned the "racer" out the BABE Rally. Competing was more than a bit stressful and considerably less fun than just making the drive. Heck, my choice of scooters isn't indicative of a need for speed or respect, it's more because I think it'd be fun. Heck, I thought Sir Paul's ride on a Primavera read like a great adventure and I was rooting for Bill Murar to get the job done with his Compact! So yeah, I'm addlepated and probably wouldn't ride to win at the expense of the scooter or my sanity.

Still, I did support the movie kickstarter campaign and I look forward to getting a better look at how deep the pool really is. Might change my tune some.

The 2016 CBR is done! I ran over 3,700 miles in 11 days on my 1967 Vespa GT.

A few days before the run the end of the selector rod broke on my 225 motor. I had to make a motor swap and put in a 2002 PX200 crate motor that was :sitting around"

Started the run with 100 miles on that motor. Ran the entire CBR. Hit every check point, No DNF on any leg! Motor ran well just not dialed in. Biggest "problem I had was a fuel tap.

I am tired!

I was on vacation all last week and could not follow the blogs and commentary, but did keep an eye on the leader boards. I have to say I was puzzled at why your scores were so low. Thanks for the explanation!

Read the thread over at Modern Vespa ( http://modernvespa.com/forum/topic14818 ... 00fd1094a1 ) Many of the bikes that finished in the top 10 are and 'daily drivers' too....
