Bogging with airbox attached

i have a Buddy 125 w/ Prima exhaust that was sitting for approx 1 year.
completely disassembled carb, cleaned and blew out all journals - everything passes air.
reassembled and installed carb. fires up and idles fine. with the airbox off it will rev but in higher RPMs sounds like it's misfiring.
as soon as i attach the stock airbox it will no longer rev but bog out. it will still idle fine.
it has the orange 'performance' coil and plug wire on it. (i find the only difference between these and stock GY6 coils is they're orange - the stock Buddy one is probably waaay better anyway)
i've had this same problem in the past with another 125 - went through the carb several times and just could get any love. finally i bunged on a new carb and it worked perfectly.
are these carbs just too finicky? once they go it's just all over with?
thanks!
