Modern Buddy

So, with all the stator talk....

My wife's new buddy 125 has always been hard to start. Then it has cut out at WOT several times. It seems like if it's warm out, it's extra hard to start.

So we did the gas cap drill, and gave it a new plug. The shop where it's warrantied gave it the once over, and all they did was also change the plug again. The problems are very intermittent. Sometimes it works wonderfully, other times it stalls out and refuses to start.

Sadly, the only warranty shop in town isn't someone I can trust any longer (which sucks, it's right down the street).

Would it be worth trying a new stator and/or VR? And if so, are these the correct ones? (scooterworks). Shockingly most of the sites I had bookmarked for these parts no longer stock them. Makes me a bit nervous.

How many miles? Does it ever die when coming up to a stop? When it dies does it start right back up or does it take a few minutes? Have you checked the valves?

When my stator went it wouldn't die at WOT, but would die as soon as you let off the throttle. Then it would take 3-10 minutes before it would start again. But from all I have read stators fail in many different ways.



I replaced my stator with the NCY stator 0900-1007, put over 30k on it.

Check to see what kind of spark you're getting first.

Pull the plug, replace it back in the boot. Make sure the threads are in contact with any part of the metal frame. Zip tie or tape the plug in place. Or you could hold the plug wire if you're brave. Don't touch the frame during your test. Crank the starter and watch the spark. Is it weak? Is it intermittent? If so, then you know you have a spark side problem.

Then you can start working backward to see where the problem lies.

It only has 1600 miles on it. Shouldn't even be due for a valve check yet, other than the first service (assuming they did that)

It only dies when we've been riding hard for a bit. Usually, besides the hard start, it runs beautifully.

I do have a spare plug wire, so I guess I could try that before pulling the trigger on more parts.

When my spark plug boot cracked it did almost the same symptoms. I have had the boot crack on both Buddy 125's (dont recall at what miles) and on the Zuma 2t's. Annoying but easy fix.

When the stator went bad on our 150, it would eat batteries. Put a new battery in it and it would be fine for a while, but eventually it would not stay charged. Also the top speed was affected on warm days (although this could have been related to the CDI rather than the stator). I replaced both the CDI and stator, both with NCY parts, at around 2500 miles. 4000 miles later and I've had no issues. Scooterworks actually referred me to Scooter Lounge for the proper parts. They don't stock a lot of that stuff themselves anymore.
