Multiple issues, please help

Post by KaiserSoze »

I have a 49cc tao tao that started making a very loud knocking noise when running and driven. I read that it could be the "CVT bearings" but Im not familiar with it so I decided to try an oil change first. Oil level was fine but a little dark so I went ahead and replaced it. All I had in my garage tho was 5w20 and like a dummy I used it thinking it would be fine for a trip to the auto parts store and back. Halfway there it started bogging down to the point it eventually quit running. At this point all it would do is crank repeatedly without turning over until the battery died. After getting it home and putting correct oil in it, still only cranks and won't turnover and now the starter solenoid plunger is stuck engaged with just a clicking noise. I have the crankcase cover removed exposing the solenoid. I desperately need honest advice on how to proceed. Thank you for any feedback.

Loud knocking is not a good sign.

Check your compression.

You've just fell victim to the Tao Tao. I despise working on them. It's a seemingly endless number of problems. The solenoid may cool off and work again. Doubtful though. Knocking noise could be major engine damage or something in the variator or belt issue. You didn't do any damage by running the wrong oil. Most likely was already mortally wounded.
161cc big bore kit, NCY big valve head Hand ported, NCY transmission kit, jetted and tuned. I can port your cylinder head.

My neighbor has a Tao Tao and something was always failing. He just took it back to the dealership while it was still under its 6 month warranty and it "seemed" ironed out. He was smoking weed with his boss before going to another job (handy man) and rear ended his boss's Ford 250 pick-up and totaled the Tao Tao (bent frame). His wife was mad as she saved for months so could have his own transportation, Im just happy I dont get asked stupid questions about it. Take the Tao Tao to a shop and pay the diagnostics fee. It may be something simple. Its very hard to diagnose something over a web page.

I'm not sure this is appropriate on this site but I think it will be ok. You might have better luck with help on your TaoTao on this forum:
http://49ccscoot.proboards.com

There is a lot of 49cc 4t information there.

That's the old ScootDawg forum, isn't it? Good choice for help with your Chinascoot.

No, that's not. The old ScootDawg is now http://itistheride.boards.net/. Lots of chinascoot owners and riders there. Good place to know.
