Malossi cylinder and variator upgrade

Post by afriendofcheese »

I've had my scoot for just a couple weeks now and am happy with the acceleration but would like to get the top end higher than 40ish. Money's pretty tight right now and making both upgrades would cost in the neighborhood of $500. I was wondering if one upgrade could be done without the other or must they be done at the same time? If not, which would be the better upgrade to make first (assuming I'll be able to make the other in the next 6 months or so)?

You might want to start with the Prima exhaust.
You should see an increase of around 5mph with it and it would be cheaper than the others.

Just remember to jet up when you add the new exhaust.
Here's what's been done to mine so far:

So being the financially irresponsible adult that I am, I decided to go ahead and schedule the aforementioned variator and cylinder kit upgrade. Sportique Scooters in Denver has a special running until the 2nd of February where I can get both done for $500 and I know I'd be kicking myself later on down the road if I didn't do it. The Rattler goes in the shop tomorrow afternoon and will be out Saturday!
I'll post the improvements.

For a general comparison-
Top speed: 37 MPH on flat, 42 on slope (indicated)
Acceleration: 0-20 MPH in 2-3 seconds(ish) , 20-30, 4 seconds(ish), 30-42
sluggish(ish)
MPG: 70

is the motor broken in yet? If not you might want to hold off a bit until it is. The motor gets a better top speed once it is, I would say about 4-5 mph more. Or you could change out the rollers to get better top speed, although your acceleration will be affected.
I have the scoots!

The motor not being broken in won't make a difference when switching out the cyclinder. After all it's the cyclinder you're realistically breaking in!

It was good to meet you at the shop the other day cheese.
Hope you like the upgrades.

Crosspost..but hey, we share the same engine!

Ok, a little update. Since the Super Bowl I've put about 400 more miles on it (gotta love Denver Winters!) and according to the shop it's broken in. I can't accurately time the acceleration but on a flat, it will climb to a top end of around 50. It doesn't get from 40-50 super fast, but it gets there. I've had it at 55 indicated on a slope. Uphill acceleration is still pretty sluggish and tops out at about 32 WOT on a steep slope.
I'm still getting the same (70) MPG, and got a high of 80 a couple tanks ago.

7g rollers were put on it with the new kit. Should I request different weights for any reason?

Next up, Prima pipe!
