Buddy 125 gas cap....

The other day I removed the gas cap off my Buddy 125 gas tank and a big "poof" of air/vapor shot out of the tank. I then noticed that the gas cap is not vented like all my other scoots' gas caps. My Buddy 170I has a completely different style gas cap (push in vs. screw in) than my 125 and I'm sure it's because of the fuel injection. I replaced the gas cap with a new vented one from a Puch moped and it fits perfectly. So far, no air/vapor pressure buildup when I remove the new gas cap.

Is the gas cap in the picture the same one that you folks' with Buddy 125's have? Just curious....

Yep. You can drill two holes in the gas cap. One in the top and one under to create a vent hole. Have you had any vapor lock issues with your scoot?

Yep, that's what the 125 caps look like. I drilled the holes in mine a couple of years ago and haven't had any vapor problems since.

I just recently started to have a hot start/idle issue which I'm hoping is related to vapor lock. When I start the bike up when the motor is warm/hot, it will initially fail to idle on the first starting attempt. It's starts and idles fine after the first attempt. This just started happening right before I removed the gas cap last week and a poof of air came out.

Where exactly did you drill the holes? Straight through the center of the cap?
What size drill bit will suffice?

Fuel injected engines pump fuel to the injectors and the excess goes back to the tank. In FI cars (which of course is all of them nowadays) the fuel tanks are sealed. I don't think I would start drilling holes in the gas cap of a fuel injected vehicle without checking with a dealer first. The "whoosh of air" might be part of the design, working correctly.

The Buddy 125 is not fuel injected.

If that cap came on your 170i, someone switched it. That is not the OEM cap for your scooter.

Use a 1/16" bit, and offset your holes. Drill in the peak of the ridge going through the top only. Flip it over and drill opposite side on the bottom. You don't want the hole to be lined up with each other.

If you re-read the original post, it was indicated that the fuel cap in question came from a Buddy 125, not a 170.

^Yes, I'm speaking solely of my Buddy 125 with the gas cap in the pictures. I drilled the holes in the cap last night and so far, so good. Thanks to everyone who responded!

Did they change to metal caps and tanks at some point? My 2007 is all plastic.
