Modern Buddy

Experienced a momentary lapse of sanity and overtightened my oil drain plug bolt (regular oil not the gear oil plug) while changing out. I thought maybe dirt and debris has crusted it on there and gave it a good solid twist in the wrong direction. This stupidity resulted in the the flange of the bolt (where the O ring sits) cracking off completely. It was a miraculously clean break. Drain plug fits back in fine and no oil seems to seep out but the O-ring can't be used any longer since there isn't anywhere for it to sit.

Now, my questions! Since it's not leaking oil... yet... is it OK to ride?
And separately, does anyone know where I can get a replacement drain plug?

Lucky for you, that drain plug is a very common part. Just go on eBay and do a search for "gy6 oil drain" and you'll come up with a bunch of hits. They're pretty cheap, too.

Of course, if you must have one that says "PGO" on it, then you can order one from scooterloungeonline. Just order one for a Buddy or Blur, they're all the same.

BTW: I've never heard of anyone doing this. Although, I have a friend that once snapped off two lug nut bolts from his car using a lug nut wrench (not air powered). Never heard of anyone ever doing that either.

I was pretty surprised myself when the flange just cracked off like that. I don't exactly have superhuman strength and doubt it could have degraded much from the elements after just 1 year of ownership (and on the west coast no less).

The pieces that cracked off were very light and clearly brittle. Only other thing I can think of is that I've rode it pretty hard in it's first year. ~9k miles for sometimes up to 6 hrs a day (delivery job) so that possibly could have weakened it from repeated chronic expansion and cooling of the metal...? Otherwise it's a cheap part for a reason.
