Unique Look at the Keihin CVK carburetor

Post by az_slynch »

A prior party had messed with the Keihin carb that came in the Pamplona. It would start and run, but wouldn't idle. Upon teardown of the carb, I found that the prior party had pried out the blanking plug for the chamber below the idle circuit and pilot circuit. I'm working with my local machinist to make a new plug, but I decided to take pictures of the chamber for those Buddy fans who are considering removing that plug...

Pro-Tip: Don't Do It! If those fuel circuits are suspect, remove the idle mixture screw and the pilot jet. Blast it out with carb cleaner or soak it in an ultrasonic cleaner.

The prior party had attempted to re-seal the chamber with the snipped tip of a caulk tube. Spoiler alert: it didn't work and it obstructed fuel flow to the idle circuit.

On to the pics:
Looking at the port between the pilot well and the chamber. The slow speed ports are visible in the roof of the chamber.

Looking at the port that leads to the mixture screw needle and on to the idle jet port, located ahead of the throttle plate. There's a bit of brass visible in one of the pilot holes; that is the throttle plate.

Throttle valve partially opened. This is about where the accelerator pump kicks in. These three ports are normally covered by the closed throttle plate.

My redneck solution to replacing that blank would be a dollop of JB Weld.

The trick would be to mix the dollop on a non-stick surface and then file/grind it to fit.

I should have my new aluminum plug tomorrow. I'd like to reinstall the carburetor before I start refitting the replacement bodywork.

Aaand we're fixed.

I had an aluminum tablet made. Diameter was .236" and height was .078". Fit perfectly!

Kudos to John at Western Drawn Products for taking the time to study the repair and make the perfect part. Smart fella too; left the brutish work of smacking a perfectly good carburetor body with a big hammer to me.

The key is squaring up the part when seating it, then using the right punch and swinging an engineer's hammer with finesse.
The repair part. Touching things up with a hobby file.
