How to find scoot shops along the travel route?

Post by pugbuddy »

I'm taking a trip from Tulsa OK to Bloomington IL this September and, while I have my route pretty much mapped out, I am having no luck finding scoot shops along the way (in case I need to pick up something or, perish the thought, need repairs)!

Any recommendations on how to best go about gathering this information?

one thing to keep in mind is that a motorcycle shop could do some of the repairs without needing a lot of parts. you may want to consider taking extra an oil filter, and other parts depending on how much wear in on the scoot. talk to brad at tulsa scooters (mechanic) about what you might need to replace before you go and what you might want to carry a spare for.

as you've probably found, for the most part the scooter store have to be supported by a larger metropolitan area, so you'll have to plan some maintence for when you know you'll be near a scoot shop the rest of the time rely on motorcycle shops, a triple a type membership, and the reliability of the buddy

p.s. how long is the trip?

Well, Google maps has it at right around 900 miles one-way. I think I had a shorter route set up but I left the maps at work.

For a trip that long, I would have the scoot serviced right before you leave. Make sure it's good to go, then your real main worry is that you'll get a flat tire. So take one of those motorcycle tubeless tire repair kits and one of those CO2 tire filler rigs from WalMart with you and you're good to go.

As a backup (or if you aren't comfortable with the idea of patching your own tire), if AAA does motorcycle towing in your state, I would carry a AAA membership. In my state, Virginia, they require that you carry AAA RV Plus before they will tow a motorcycle. Paige, tells me that the situation is very different in California, where they require you to carry your insurance with AAA before they will do a tow. (It varies by state, and a lot of folks here are from CA, so that's why I pointed that out, even though I see you are not from CA) Call them and ask what the rules are in your state first. The only time my scooter needed a tow, in Oregon, they did a great job of taking care of me. They sent out a special motorcycle towing trailer and treated me like royalty.

Other than that, just enjoy your ride and let us know how it goes.
