A very boring mod

My front cover (fender?) had a bit of rattle. When idling, it was louder than the muffler.

I stopped today at my local auto stereo store and picked up a small sheet of Hush Mat. I trimmed a couple pieces to fit on the inside of the plastic fender, stuck them on and reattached the fender.

Instantly no more rattle. Boring, but effective.

That's cool... Is it very expensive? I have some rattling in my headset, especially when I go over bumps. I think I will look into that if it's not too pricey, I figured I'd try to find exactly what's making the noise and try to fix it first. Thanks for the heads-up on the Hush Mat.

I got two 12-inch by 12-inch sheets for $20 ... and I had a lot left over.

One other thing I noticed while I had the front fender (is it a fender?) off was that one of the four plastic clips was bent in just enough that it wasn't catching. That was probably the root cause of the rattle, but who knows for sure. I very carefully gave it a blast from the hot air gun and bent back in place. Once it cooled, it clicked. Since I had the Hush Mat, I used it anyway and it does make the front part sound less plastic-y.

Wait do you mean the front cover that is in your avatar picture? As in the plastic part that covers the front of the scooter? Or the actual fender?

I have always felt like there's an almost equal amount of plastic rattle and muffler noise to the Buddy and have wanted to remedy that.

It's the front cover like in my avvy. What is that? The nose cover?

This Hush Mat stuff is pretty neat stuff. The car stereo dealer had a display set up with two hanging cymbals and a little wooden mallet. You hit the cymbal with no Hush Mat and it bangs loud. The other cymbal had about a 2"x2" square of Hush Mat on it and it just went "thud" when you hit it.

Back in the day, we used a similar product called Dynomat to stop trunk rattles when we'd install subs. I think Phoenix Gold also makes a version of this. Just ask for sounds dampening material at your local car audio shop and they'll point you in the right direction.

I think leg shield seems to be the most common term. Cool idea.

when I saw the topic that said " a very boring mod" all i could think of for some reason was a 30 year old in a suit with a Who record and a stamp collection

when i last took my buddy in for a tune up i asked to have the rattle looked at and fixed if possible. it started rattling after 4500 miles. he put some cusioning on either side and it worked!...until the next morning when i tumped it over and cracked the fairing right where myers had placed the cusioning. 20 minutes later i pilled it off and handed it back to him. jeez, i hate it that happened, i was most happy for the fix. now i'll need to replace the fairing if i want to be buzz free but that won't happen anytime time soon if ever.
