My buddy and I might be on Google Maps Street View!!!
I was sitting at a red light in seattle, and a car turns and drives past with this 6-7 foot tall "mast" sticking off the roof of it with about 16 cameras pointing every direction. On the side of the car was a logo that said "Google Maps Street View"
If you have no idea what I am talking about, go to
www.maps.google.com and zoom in on Chicago, or some other big city until you are able to see blue highlighted streets... You can actually go all the way down to street view, and its like you are at street level looking around on that spot! If I do show up on there, ill post a link to it!
EDIT!!! I MADE IT ON STREETVIEW!!!!!
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=47.6 ... p=1,0,,0,5
CHECK IT OUT!!!

not every city has it yet... I know Chicago does... If you zoom in on downtown chicago you should be able to do it. There is a button on the upper right hand corner of the map you need to click on...

So THAT's how they do it. Street View is one of those things I love about living in the future!
What intersection were you at? I think they do long exposures or some other means to take out the vehicles on the street.

Let's go to Beverly Hills!
http://tinyurl.com/5t4mw8
It's like a 3D interactive map that lets you navigate areas. It's great for locating businesses or just checking things out.

Street view serves no real purpose but it sure is awesome

I was able to see my old apartment in Detriot and then realized that they built an IKEA 2 miles away.

now I have to drive 5 hours to get to one

I use it all the time when planning a route to check the speed limits on the streets i dont know. kinda takes awile just clicking down the road though
Posted: Fri May 30, 2008 6:21 am
by maribell
should have done that earlier. i wound up in uncharted territory on a "farm road" with a 65 MPH speed limit.

My wife's car is visible, in our driveway, in street view.

Looks like they've cut way back on the resolution. When it first came out you could easily read car license plate numbers.

There was a story (CNN I believe) about a couple who sued Google Maps for invasion of their privacy. They won the suit and Google has removed the images of their home which was indeed on a private street.
Story
here.

The truck had to have driven down our street on Monday morning about two or three months ago. The trash cans are out but not emptied yet, my daughter's car is in the driveway, and my next door neighbor's police car is parked in the street. I hadn't pruned the maple tree in the front yard, but I had replaced the dead fir tree with a small blue spruce.
I wish they'd come back now that the maple looks more like a tree and the grass has turned green.

I've used street views a few times to figure out where business are as well as how some streets meet (Denver is full of 5 way stops with weird ways about how to go through them)

The Google mappers hit Greenville, SC pretty hard recently. I just noticed that the entire area in which I live is now on streetview, including the place where I work, (no cars in the parking lot) and my house. My Border Collie happened to be chillin' in front of the house and you can see her watching the google guys as they drove by. I love this tech.
Hopefully you're on there. I saw the Google car drive by me twice when they were here. I was pretty excited that I would be on the streetview, but I don't show up in either of the places I saw them drive by. I guess they don't have the camera on all the time.

my daughter, her husband, two kids and dog are plainly visable walking across the street in front of their house. the view is from the side street if you look back up their street. they are not visable in the views from their street. it's pretty crazy to know they are on the web for the world to see - they never noticed the camera van passing, or dont remember it.

They blanketed my area pretty heavily as well.
I hoped on there to see if the scooter store had lots of scoots out front but it didnt. Oh well.

from what I hear they do a couple of drive bys, and then take the best shots with the least people and cars...or dogs

But cool, that'd be neat if you were there.

All I know is that they will change views every once in a while. Lou Piniella (Chicago Cubs Manager) was on streetview out on Clark St. just south of Wrigley Field apparently walking to his car (a chevy SUV parked on the street - I dont think Lou has a Buddy). They changed it a day or two after it became public knowledge.
The invasion of privacy thing is a bit odd - after all - anyone can walk down the street and see stuff....

A few months ago, they still hadn't done my city. Now I see they have.
My car wasn't home, so I went to my office and it's sitting there in the parking lot. But it's the only one there so that means it was taken between 5PM and 6PM as I tend to stay late. Sun was still up so it was later in the year. The pic of my house which is 2 miles away the tree had no leaves on it so it was more like winter time.
I also found the house I lived in when I was a kid in So. Cal. I hardly recognize the old neighborhood. it was new when we moved in. Now all the trees are huge.
Cool stuff

This is super-valuable to us 50cc riders to check out speed limits and lane widths in trying to get to new locations!

Well, someone in Santa Monica got their scooter on Streetview. This is at the Cock & Bull Pub, a frequent scooterist meeting place and where we're meeting for this weekend's rally.

My brother was captured walking around the back of his car while it was in his garage w/garage door open at his home.
My girlfriend's son was talking to a neighbor in front of her house so he's in their picture too!
Unreal.

I was once able to find a hotel just down the street from one that was sold out. I needed to be in walking distance from a conference. I ended up finding a nice mom and pop type hotel. Oh, I paid half the price of the hampton as well. It has its uses if you get creative. I also once steered myself clear of the "hood". I was ready to book a room and decided to do a quick check of the area and found that it was run down and there were lots of people hanging on the corner.

So I just checked maps.google.com and...
Did Portland have streetview just a little while ago? Because it does now, and so does a bunch of stuff almost up to Centralia Washington along the 5. I think Seattle is coming soon!

I saw this on the news a week or so back:

apparently, this dude was passed out on his lawn when the car went by. He sued google for the embarassment and they removed the photo.

Yeah, Portland has had streetview for quite a while now. We were one of the first cities to get it.
EDIT: In fact looking at the streetview of my house, there is a project car in my driveway that I sold over a year and a half ago.

One of my claims to e-fame is my appearance on Street View. Here I am, walking home from the store. Bonus stalker points: this is what comes up when my address is typed into the site. Sigh.

Did he sue the company that made the beverages that got him drunk, too? Idiot! Google should have fought it. He deserves the shame!

apparently, he fell out of the cab and just slept it off at that point. I've done a similar maneuver before. woulda been nice if my wife woulda helped me up the steps to the apartment.

fortunately, in the end, there were no lawyers involved.

The best thing about this is that if you move down the street, you can watch a time-lapse of the fight. Well, about 4 or 5 frames. Hilarious.
