So sad. Folks, be very careful. I think most if not all of us have had a close call or two that could have ended up looking eerily similar to that pic. That's the biggest problem I've had on my scoot...people don't see me and pull right out in front of me. Always assume that they can't see you, and be ready to do whatever you need to do to stay safe.

Sad. Doesn't look like that much damage to the van or the bike, so it's probably even more tragic that it was a freak accident that he died.
Stories like this make me question my quest for a scoot.

This is indeed tragic, and I hope your quest lives on.
I just heard a story over in the MINI community about somebody that flipped their MINI and didn't survive, and another where they did. The road is a dangerous place regardless of what you're driving. There was a story earlier this year about a guy from Scoot magazine that took a Lexus head-on and lived to tell about it. Respect the risks, but scooting is hardly the most dangerous activity on the roadway. That it was chest trauma that killed him makes me wonder if something like the Icon Field Armor vest could have helped. It's sobering for sure.
Prayers and thoughts for the rider and those who will miss him.

My guess would be that if his scoot had one of those short windshields, that this was the culprit. Driving that into your chest at 35 mph would certainly do a lot of damage.
My boss rides motorcycles, and refuses to ride a bike with a windshield after witnessing a fatal motorcycle accident in which the plexiglass windshield removed the top half of the rider's head.

Hmmm... makes me want to replace my windshield bolts with nylon so they'd be breakaway.

I think you guys are underestimating the impact when a rider goes flying off a scoot or cycle at 35 mph. If you slam into something like the side of a vehicle or a concrete wall that is pretty much the definition of blunt trauma. Safe riding habits and gear for a spill are the best you are going to do.
By the way, what kind of "scooter" is that?

The story doesn't say anything about the windshield specifically--I was just speculating on what could have caused the blunt force trauma that killed the man.
Sorry for the confusion.

It's not very hard to obtain a serious blow to the chest. Last fall I was in an accident with a mini-van. I was probably going about 40-45mph before slamming on my brakes and colliding with the van. My chrome front rack saved my bike (still ran, no major damage, and didn't drop it) but the force of the impact caused a collision between my sternum/ribs and the 'dash'. X-rays showed that there were no fractures, but the severity of bruising made simple things like lifting my arms painful. So like Dooglas said, windshield or not, there are lots of things to slam into and cause serious blunt trauma.

it looks like a Burgman650 to me (gas tank door on the left rear fender) - I doubt the windshield is the culprit, I've never seen a 650 with short screen, the stock screen is tall enough that his helmet would take the hit and many have larger aftermarket screens. he probably hit the dash or went over it into the van - but it's impossible to verify anything based on the article posted.
my sincere condolences to his survivers.
be careful out there

Looks like new bike..possibly (could not load up the article ) new rider? Lots more scoots out there so unfortunately there are going to be a lot more of these. It not only happens to us though. When my FJ Cruiser came out I joined their new forum. Within a week there were several fatalities due to driver error. Because the FJ is a 4x4 most by new off roaders rolling off something while trail riding ...like a cliff.
Like I said I could not load the article so I do not know whose's fault it was. Sorry for the rider's family. Perhaps if the numbers of riders go up states should consider a half lane for riders as they do for bicyclists on new roads. The new road they built down from me is not even a major one and it has 6 lanes! The interstate it parrallels only has 4!
