Anybody have any experience w/ painting helmets? Like with Krylon or something like that? I just want glossy white with the Star Wars New Republic emblem, ala Luke Skywalker. (I know, geek, geek, geek) :D

kinda large at 6" across

could always contact your local custom vinyl shop. It won't be as expensive as you think.

Give them a call.

I've read that using just any ol' paint can screw up the plastic that makes up the outer shell of the helmet and make it less effective. Reflective vinyl would be a better route, I think.

I've heard that as well.

I asked at a local body shop how much they would charge to do a custom, highly reflective paint job on a helmet for me.

They quoted me a price at $360. More then the helmet cost.

You can buy reflective paint in a rattle can... KRYLON makes one called reflect-a-lite that I think is just a clear-coat you can put on anything! There are other brands too, I can't remember the name it's like 3 letters.

As far as Starwars goes, I think I'd fit in best with Ewoks... We just want those dang machines out of out forest!!! Oh, but you can leave the speeders.

I would go vinyl. You can always peel off the vinyl if you do not like it. I would get the reflective red and do a stripe down the middle & the 2 logos on the sides.

Click here & scroll about 3/4 down the page to see photos.

My son is ready to disown me- he's always rooting for the Empire. I like old-school Jedi myself. He calls me rebel-scum.

Cool. Nope, just a Marvin the Martian tat I got when I was 26. That is just the symbol I want. Can you email me an attachment in JPEG? Do you have any pics of Luke's helmet? Thanks.

I didn't see this post when I asked you about the JPEG. Those are very cool- exactly what I want, thanks! The trouble is, my helmet is black with all these graphics on it. The dealer didn't have solid colors in my size, and I needed to ride RIGHT THEN!

These helmets are painted, there's gotta be a paint that won't decrease it's effectiveness.

Thanks again for the info. May the force be with you. :D

Now that I wear a modular most of the time, maybe I'll get some paint and an extra visor for my old Nolan N-42 and finally do this customization:

I did some digging online and I found a couple recommendations to use automotive acrylic and urethane/polyurethane paints and clear coats. A lot of the people who do custom airbrush work recommend House of Kolor brand.

A small tutorial showing a fully painted helmet:

Heh heh heh. I have to order the new hardware for the face shield. I had the originals but they got lost (probably thrown away) the first day I had the helmet. :goofy:

Maybe I'll get to that someday...

and the thing is that once you do the helmet, well . . . then you probably will want to do something with the jacket . . . and then something with the scooter . . . and then . . . I know if it was me it would end up getting expensive by the time I finally stopped !

Yeah, now that I think about it having the shield pointed like that could be a serious problem if you were in an accident... just sayin...
