So in Texas, you have to get a permit before the license right? And I was looking it up and the dmv listed this:

2) How do I obtain a motorcycle instruction permit?
Present the completion certificate of the Motorcycle Safety Course (MSB-8). Be advised that the MSC must be approved by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
Pay the required fee. 37 Texas Administrative Code 15.40, Texas Transportation Code 521.421.
Pass the written and vision exam. 37 Texas Administrative Code 15.51, 37 Texas Administrative Code 15.52.
Application must include photograph and thumbprints; however, thumbprints are not included on the driver license. 37 Texas Administrative Code 15.44, 37 Texas Administrative Code 15.45, Texas Transportation Code 521.142.

So does this mean I have to take the MSF to get a permit? I thought most people just show up and take a test and they get their permit that way? Btw, I'm only 20 and it says I need to be observed by someone over 21, will they still give it to me anyways? I eventually plan on taking the MSF when I have time but I'm at college in GA so I will only have a couple of days during the break when I go home to get it. Can anyone comment?

I would go with getting in it GA. There is no such thing as an M permit in Texas. You either ride legally, or you don't.

What is the motorcycle instruction permit then? I got that from the dmv website? Would I be allowed to get a permit in GA? How does that work?

TX doesn't offer a permit.

taking the MSF course, and passing the riding test at the end, means you do not have to take the driving portion of the test for your M endorsement. You still have to take the written portion of the test.

I cannot explain why it says the word permit since it's not offered.

Is your Dr License from TX or GA?

That could make a difference.

Or do you have Dr Lic from both states?

Best to ask because then you've got insurance to deal with; if you are in college, there could be some other details to be aware of.

If you can get your M endorsement in GA, do so. But if you move back to TX, it may not be valid in TX unless you take the MSF course and have certificate.

I think the 'permit' you are referring to is just duplicate language from the 'permit' you get when you turn 15 or 16, *before* you take the driving test.

The M classification doesn't allow for a permit, you're either licensed or you are not. And I believe if you have a TX DL, you won't be able to get the M license in GA without releasing your TX DL to GA.

You can either take the driving AND written test at the DPS in TX, without classes (MSF) - or - you can take the MSF and then just the written test at the DPS for your M license.

If you're going to take the MSF course, make your reservation now. The weekend classes are booked months in advance around here, and the weekday classes are filling up.

I just took mine this week, and I'm damn glad I did. I can't recommend it enough. It should be required for all riders, as far as I'm concerned.

I have a Texas license, so I'm assuming I have to get the endorsement on there. When you guys took the MSF, did you actually ride their motorcycles or did you bring your scooter. I can't bring my scooter because well, its in GA. I'm curious to know how to ride a motorcycle as well. Do you think I'll fail if it's my first time?

during the MSF they provided a motorcycle for my hubby (who had never even been a passenger on a motorcycle) and a scooter for me, since I told them I had already ordered a scooter and wasn't interested in a motorcycle. we both LOVED the course and learned a TON. I also highly recommend it. and , fyi, we both passed with flying colors, me only missing 3 points for not making a curve fast enough and him only missing 1 point for putting a foot down (i don't remember where).

After you take you written test and pass you will be ofered a learners permit that will allow you to ride with a licensed rider 21 and over in sight.

When you take your riding test you will need to have someone ride your scoot or haul it (or something to take your test on) to the DPS site. The riding test takes about 15 min.

There is.....I was offered one after I took my written and my wife got hers after she took her written. She rode with me for about a month before she took her riding test.

You do have to ride with a lic rider 21 or over in sight. You can not ride alone with the permit.
