I have been wanting to figure out a way to fashion some sort of backrest for the buddy, as you will come to find out my fabrication skills are lacking so I did what I could to improvise the following...
you can see the whole story at my cannonball website

I know that there's some tail packs out there that offer a back rest cushion. Not sure if that's the route you'e looking for, but it's definitely an option. I'll post a link come tomorrow if no one else beats me to it, but I've seen a few while I was looking for saddlebag and similar accessories for the buddy. Have fun!

I don't know about the backrest, but I love the ammo can idea. I may steal that one - it'll add a little testosterone to my buddy.

yeah what i wanted to do originally and may do later on is attach the ammo cans to the sides like hard paniers, but to the rear rack was easier and i decided to hang the backrest off of it.

Don't get me wrong, the ammo-crate is awesome in it's own rights, I mean, you can lock that one up! Just saying that there's some out there that are prefabricated and fairly well thought out... comfort-wise.

How do you open your seat? open the can and it flips to the side?

no offense taken i know it's weird looking. but the bags that fit on the seat just don't go up high enough on the back in my opinion.

Robonz, I am really diggin' what you've done here. Not only did you get yourself a new comfy backrest (comfy being subjective of course.. I hope it's comfy enough for you!), you also have some extra storage space for whatever you may need it for!
Looking at the picture, it looks like it is secured quite well. Have you noticed any shifting or movement while riding? My personal concern if I were to have something like this set up would be the amount of pressure pushing back onto the rest and knowing that the back rack is what's keeping me vertical!

i took it for a long ride today and actually found it was more comfortable with the backrest a lot closer to the back of the bike. the whole thing is very stable. i'll probably end up cutting more and more off of those rails. it is so close to the ammo can now that i'm thinking that there may be a more practical way to get the rest on the "front" of the ammo can instead of on top.
a girl pulled up to me at a stoplight on a vino and she said...
"i like your buddy, but what's that thing on the back?"
the backrest was a life saver on the long ride, as i could take some prussure off of my bum and put it on my back and feet for a while.
