Sorry for all these posts that have nothing to do with scooters...

Firefox has been REALLY slow on my computer the last couple days and is not blocking all the pop-ups . Anyone know what might be the cause/ how to fix? Thanks in advance.

Hmmm.

What type of internet do you have? Do you do DSL or Highspeed? If so, you have a modem where your cable or phone line connects into. Then take the plug out the little box and leave it off for 10 seconds. Plug back in and give it a minute to set itself up after being turned off.

See if it is fixed.

If not. Do a speed test from speedtest.net, how fast is your internet supposed to be, and how fast was tested? It's ok to be slightly down from what you purchased as advertised. If it's majorly down, you could have too much spyware/adware on your PC which are doing so much tracking, it slows down the simplest internet browsing.

Do you have spybot search and destroy or adaware 2007 on your PC? They are free and scan and delete crappy spyware/adware from your computer. Also try a virus scan if this doesnt work. I recommend AVG 8.0 if you dont have a virus scanner.

Or...if all fails...maybe it's just one of those slow days...

I use Firefox too, but I'm still using firefox 2, fully updated. Havent noticed a slowdown visitng modern buddy.

get a mac. forget about crap on your computer.

Look up "no script" in the addon section for Mozilla. You can pretty much disable most other add-ons (speeding up Firefox). the down side is that No-Script requires a pretty steep learning phase (to determine trusted sites and know who to block). It makes FF a dream to use. I really feel like the internet is mine again.

As a side note, I use "No Script" with FF 2.ish. Run a free spyware scan to make sure you're not being bogged down with junk-ware. Ad-aware personal edition and Spybot-Search and Destroy are a good combination. Both are free, both can be found at Cnet's download.com, and both can be run at the same time (just walk away from your computer for like 15 minutes, cause you won't be able to do anything on it). I think specifically Ad-Aware has taken the route of "free-with strings, or at least snares" Make sure you select the "free" version.... if it tells you that you have to upgrade, look for an option that says upgrade later. If I recall correctly, they started using an underhanded trick that makes it look like there is no free version. You basically have to tell it that you're not interested in the "full" version. Check it out, it should make sense. I can't pin it down, as it's been a while since I've installed it.

Running a few anti-spyware apps and starting a script-blocking app should really speed up your connection. Anything beats streamlining market-research groups data feed from your computer (unknowingly, at that!!?!)

I know a lot of people who use Firefox on their Macs.

I occasionally have to. For some reason, too many companies have developed web-based CMSs and other crap that isn't Safari-friendly. Jerks. I still prefer Safari.

Just remember, a ISP, modem, or line issue doesnt mean your internet will be faster on a mac than a PC. They both use the same technology, so if it is screwed up somehow, your mac will be slow too.

Mac/PC and what version of FF?

FF 3 just came out and there are probably still some incompatible extensions. I think it's the fastest FF ever on the Mac side (though I've seen some tests that show Safari is still quicker, my purely subjective experience is that the opposite is true), so if you're on a Mac and feel like FF 3 is slow... hmmm...

And to rule out the stuff jfrost is saying, is this specifically a FF issue? Other browsers are working fine?

hmm. I have the dreaded "PC", not a mac. I have FF v.2 and Spybot. I've never had problems until just recently and I haven't removed any programs or changed any preferences as far as I know... I guess I'll try Internet Explorer (wow, haven't used that in while) and see if it is equally annoying. Thanks everyone.

Well, I tried IE and it sucked (big surprise). I guess then I need to try the unplug thing? Here goes nothin...

P.S. found the "no script" add-on and when I clicked on it, it said "add-on not found"

Firefox 3.0 for Windows has been working great for me. It is much nicer than the earlier versions. I suggest you upgrade.

Yeah definitely upgrade to 3.0 it seems to be getting mostly great reviews.

But if you have all around slowness (IE and FF) it's not likely Firefox, but your connection.

There is a new version of Safari for Windows, too...
