I love the smell of 2T in the morning
Beautiful cool still morning here in Indiana. Nothing like the smell and haze of two stroke smoke wafting up around you at red lights and reflecting in the headlights of the cars behind you. Good way to start the day.

"Stink"? Maybe you need to try a different oil.desmolicious wrote:So do you lot who go all ga ga over the scoot's stink feel the same way when you do some gardening?

For me it's nostalgia. The smell of 2T takes me back to my younger days of dirtbiking with my brothers and friends. Very good times.
Does pushing a Lawnboy elicit the same response? Well, sometimes, briefly. It's really the combination of being on two wheels with the scent for me though.

Funny, I was on my 4T and came up behind either a Vespa PX or an older Stella (I couldn't tell since it happened quickly) and I don't recall a smell but what I do remember was the sound; I really liked that louder sound over my quiet Stella sound. There was something authentic about the sound.

I was at a rally last year and there was one particular group of 2T's that everyone noticed by the smell. All 2T exhaust does not smell the same, my friends. They weren't using one of those weird fruit scented oils. We asked and, apparently, they were getting from Europe. I can't remember what it was, but it smelled great.
Of course, I also love the smell of diesel exhaust.

Castor oil has a very distinct smell that was common around 2 strokes in the 70's. There are still quite a few brands, Klotz Benol, Castrol R (the Castrol name came from the castor oil they used), etc. Unfortunately for those of us who use the stock oil injection system, it's not a good option (I don't believe it has the right viscosity, and it doesn't behave well when mixed with normal 2t oil). My friends who pre-mix use it once in a while, and you immediately know when they do.Howardr wrote:I was at a rally last year and there was one particular group of 2T's that everyone noticed by the smell. I don't mind the smell of a good synthetic 2T (I use Motul 710), but cheap lawnmower oil just smells like stale fuel to me.
I have to admit I'm not a big fan of diesel, but Klotz racing fuel, that's a different story...... and no, I do not like the smell of automotive gear lube, that's just over the top.

^^^ Agreed, Castor has its own distinct smell, but it has all sorts of problems. Phase seperation, it drops out of suspension VERY quickley and yeah, it DOES NOT get along well with other oils.
No real need other than Nostalgia to use it these days.
And I agree, a good high end synthetic, 710, spectro etc. smells GREAT...That wierd strawberry stuff is funny the first time you smell it, just for the novelty. But give me race fuel ANY DAY!...Particularly fond of C12 VP

Authenticity and history......that's what 2T smoke and the distinctive sound of the engine is all about. It's where all scooter were back in the day. It's a ride down memory lane. The 2T Stella sounds even better if you add the Sito Plus exhaust, and smells even better if you use Scoot City Strawberry Scented Oil.

Well to some "Stench" it is not......desmolicious wrote: And yet I'm wondering about this fascination with the stench.
It is exactly the same stink that leaf blowers, lawn mowers etc put out.
So do you lot who go all ga ga over the scoot's stink feel the same way when you do some gardening?
And I love the smell of my old two stroke lawn mower...... My father bought it for me in 1975 to mow his lawn with, I still use it!!

I've always used the 'Lawn Boy' brand.....viney266 wrote:Some of the cheap lawnmower stuff is stinky...but the good stuff? no way
That's what Dad used, that's what I use.
Amazing the memories that can be 'induced' by just a smell.
Because of that, I actually enjoy mowing the lawn!

I love it as well. It's the thing I probably miss most on the 4T- but it makes up for it in other ways.
I think for the me the smell just has so many happy associations with it. MAny great rides over the years have made it smell good. Certainly wouldn't like it otherwise. They say smell has a very direct link to the way we make and store memories. That's a powerful thing there..
