Tubeless

Post by Tom »

Bought the Heidenau K-61s (2.50X10) and they have arrived. Now I discover they are tubeless. So I clearly didn't read all the way through..

No problem, I can think of worse problems than taking an upgrade. Went to pick up those SIP tubeless rims though, and they appear to be unavailable at the moment.

Anyone know where they might be available?

No idea about tubeless rims, however I can tell you that you can mount tubeless tires on your stock Stella rims by using a tube.

The stock maxxis tires that came with mine have tubeless printed on the side and sure enough I had tubes in them :)

OH! Wonderful. I'll just do that for now, and think about replacing the rims later.

Thanks for the info!

I'm not even sure about tubeless being an upgrade.

Sure they are easy to plug on the roadside if you get a hole, but that's why we carry a spare with us.

And mounting on the rim? I'd much rather mess with a tube tire than a tubeless!

That's a relief. I was 'sure' when I placed the order, but when I realized that there was a potential mistake (think I was looking at a different product later) all of the sudden I wasn't so sure about my 'sure'. Plus I didn't even realize I was buying tubeless, so that was throwing me for a loop too. I'll be having them put on next week.

Hehe I know how you must have felt.

I was really confused at first since I always thought I had no tubes given that the tires that came with the bike read 'tubeless' on the side.

I think the tire being tubeless is to be taken as an indication that it can indeed be used as tubeless but can still accommodate a tube.

SIP also sells them as a package with high speed rated tires (75 mph) already mounted

Going tubeless is probably the biggest safety upgrade you can make. It is very rare to have a blowout on a tubeless tire. You get a puncture and it leaks slowly.

With a tubed tire it's like popping a balloon. I've had a low speed blow out...that was bad enough. I've seen a high speed blowout and was amazed that he stayed upright.

Ah that is true. My only flat so far was a slow leak that made the bike feel squirrelly during turns, I rode maybe 10 miles with that before it got bad enough that I started thinking my wheel had gone out of alignment, luckily it just needed a new tube :D

I got a flat on a front once, but it was a motorcycle. Not too bad, but I wasn't going very fast. It just got really heavy on the steering, probably doesn't count for a blowout.

I think I would consider the tubeless as an upgrade because I let my mechanic do everything on the Stella. Nevertheless, the rims seem to still be unavailable. They are shown on the site, but when I add them to the basket and try and check out, they aren't there. I'll likely get them when they are back in stock..

Most people today don't really know what a blow out is.

You can hear it...it sounds like popping a balloon..but much louder (higher pressure) then your tire is instantly completely flat...and it is instant and completely flat

The first tire blowout i experienced, was loud and certainly terrifying. Lost total control of the rear of the Stella. Scared me half to death. A tire change and a ride home and then i ordered tubeless rims and never looked back. Ordered mine from scooter mercato. Dave ia an awesome guy. He had the new tires mounted too prior to shipping.
